So on January 8th season 3 of Archer comes out on DVD (at least for region 1 countries) and season 4 starts airing on January 17th on FX. I'm not a big fan of having a show's season premiere so close after the previous season is released on home video. I understand why this is done, the release of the previous season on DVD/Blu-ray/whatever is a great way to promote the next season about to air and promoting both is a way for the marketing department to kill two birds with one stone, but it still irritates me. The reason why I bring up Archer as an example, other than being a fairly recent example is a show I am trying to catch up on and I don't the idea of having to "cram" before watching the recent season of a TV show (although 13 episodes of 22 minute long program in 9 days shouldn't be that monumental of a task).

Yes they did this 'Dexter' and the spoiled the of the Jon Lithgow season at the start of the DVD.
My advise: when you put on a TV series DVD to catch up.. Mute the sound, go and do something away from the TV.. and hopefully when you come back the main menu will be waiting for you.
P.S: I also preorded that same Archer DVD... High Five!

How I Met Your Mother does this every season. I started watching while they aired season five. I bought the first three seasons and got caught up, but had to wait for season four on DVD. It came out and season five was already on its fifth or sixth episode by the time I finished it.
Been playing catchup every since.

I just don't get why they bring out 'complete seasons' of TV shows so quickly after that season has ended. I mean, I get why ($$$) but I figure that the producers of a series would be more interested in making more money by selling the show into syndication rather than going directly to the home market. There's tons of channels out there struggling to fill their schedule, why not get a show that people are clamoring to watch again?

HBO release their season DVDs like a year after they air. I don't have cable so I had to rely on the DVD releases. Well I got an Apple TV now, so I just get season pass and I'm sorted now.

On one hand, it can be a pretty annoying practice, yeah. On the other, if it means in March we'll finally get the first season of Legend of Korra on DVD I'm okay with it.

Heck, I'm still waiting on DVD releases - new or continued - of a ton of shows I love (Salute Your Shorts, Batman, DuckTales, etc.) - I'd love to have them coming out too fast!

The problem is that not every person has access to every tv channel, so the release points make some sense from that standpoint. It's a very irritating thing to have, especially when I want to watch an HBO show. HBO is the absolute worst in that regard. Not only are they late, but they are also extremely overpriced (well, at least were. No way should anyone have to pay $99 for ONE Season of The Sopranos. Ever.) I literally had to wait a year plus for them to release Season One of The Wire on DVD. By that time, Season 2 was already airing, and since I never had HBO (my parents did), I was catching all kinds of spoiler hell.
Showtime is pretty bad at it too.

There was a very short-lived syndicated version of Lost which bombed due to the serialized format. Mainly, current syndication focuses either on sitcoms or stand-alone crime dramas, which can be aired in any order and can be seen without that much knowledge of story arcs.

Always Sunny does this too. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if every FX series does this.
