He's in the next batch of WWE 13 DLC, and it got me thinking...
What was the explanation for Terry Funk becoming Chainsaw Charlie? I was 7 or 8 at the time, and for the life of me I can't remember how that came about. Just Terry's overall insanity manifesting itself as a new personality?

I don't think there was an explanation as to why. Funk had just come out of one of his many "retirements" and appeared on Raw as Charlie.

An additional question should be what the hell where they thinking with that thing on his head According to his autobiography, the Funker himself came up with everything involved with Charlie. Even he can't really explain what he was thinking.

Raw magazine had a story around the time of his "debut" about why he became Charlie. Something about how he loved the tool shed back on the ranch or something equally as strange. (Raw magazine was in its era of a combination of kayfabe & reality.)
Another view I remember was Terry saying, "If everybody knows Cactus Jack is Mick Foley yet like him anyway, then why not be Chainsaw Charlie even though everybody knows who I am?" (I'm paraphrasing, but that's the loose reasoning.)

What happened that time he randomly retired before a ppv match interview and Bradshaw was just like all wtf man? I agree with you on that. Let me just point this out: I first got into wrestling in 1998, so I wasn't too familiar with the history of Terry Funk and I wondered why an old guy was still wrestling even at that point. I actually believed that he would return in January (Because Funker said that he would be out for six months), possibly for an appearance in the Rumble. Only for Funker to appear in ECW a few months after Fully Loaded. So much for a possible Funk and Bradshaw feud, huh? It seemed like a good buildup, but Funk wasn't going to appear after that, so it was pointless.

Another view I remember was Terry saying, "If everybody knows Cactus Jack is Mick Foley yet like him anyway, then why not be Chainsaw Charlie even though everybody knows who I am?" (I'm paraphrasing, but that's the loose reasoning.) I remember that as well, and that's how I took it. He was always referred to as Terry Funk, and being Chainsaw Charlie was like an alter ego, and he teamed with Cactus Jack, who was also an alter ego. So the team consisted of two crazy men with alter egos, and I thought it fit well. I certainly will say that when I saw a wooden box random on the ramp during Raw, I did not expect a man cutting through it with a chainsaw, wielding it around and wearing panty hose on his hand. I definitely did not see that coming. I guess that's one thing I miss about WWE. Unpredictability. How can someone online spoil that? I can't imagine on the Observer, well, there's a rumour that Terry Funk is going to return to WWE in a box with panty hose on his head, wielding around a chainsaw.

probably would have been less Wrestlecrap worthy if he'd have worn a better mask (say, a hockey mask)

I actually liked the gimmick because of how over-the-top it was as a hardcore wrestling character. It wasn't SUPPOSED to be taken seriously.

Logged in just to say this - Chainsaw Charlie had a huge impact on me growing up. I had just started watching WWF, had no idea who Terry Funk was and suddenly there was this madman with a chainsaw running around the place. I dress as him for Halloween now.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=2grrjzx-RoEThis clip is everything that was awesome and everything that was terrible about the Attitude Era. Intense rivalries and unexpected moments, mixed in with a man taking 3 unprotected chair shots to the head, as well as taking a dive off the stage completely missing the table.
