Hey guys. I could use some help with a sci-fi/fantasy story I've been working on off-and-on for about two years
It's about a woman named Alisia who is about 30, is single, and lives a pretty normal life until one day she discovers she has the power to fly. The thrust of the story is basically how would a "normal" person deal with suddenly being given a "superpower" as it were.
What I need help with is, how do you think she should discover her power? I had an idea of her jumping off a bridge and opening her eyes to find she's not falling
I would love to work on my story, but I guess I just need some help getting myself started
Thanks in advance
Brian~

Is she normally suicidal? What does she do for a living? What's her personality like? What is a normal day for her?
I find that plot questions often can often be resolved by answering character questions, so her personality could lead you to a way to introduce it. If she's suicidal, the bridge thing may work although depending on the setting, that may also determine who else knows about the power. Or maybe she was bungee jumping or sky diving and something went horribly wrong.
There's also nothing wrong by making it seem relatively minor. If she's meant to be a practical or handy person, maybe she fell from something less spectacular, like a ladder or a porch. You could even have her slipping on ice when her power kicks in for the first time, causing her to float in the air.
It really depends on how many people you'd want to know and the personality of the character. I'd hammer that down and it may come to you.

Yeah, thing is, I had her depressed because her life was so normal, but I realize now "heroes" already went down this road

I don't think she should fall. She could be in a situation where she needs to reach something and unconsciously flies to get it.

Saves someone instinctively.
Someone who's falling.

Suicidal because life is too normal is a bit of a pill to swallow for me. If you're going to go the suicidal route, it makes the character a lot more sympathetic if you have them that way because of tragedy rather than boredom.

I think she should have a fear of flying and/or heights, as her therapist helps her takes steps to overcome it (like the aforementioned ladders, parachute jumps etc) she finds out she can fly. There must be a good story in there about overcoming fear, realising your full potential or even being happy with what you have in life.
If you use this idea my standard and completely 100% legally binding consultancy fee for this service is just 10% of all you profits.

I don't think she should fall. She could be in a situation where she needs to reach something and unconsciously flies to get it. I like this idea. It could also fit in with the suicidal element. She has to overcome her depression, and suddenly flying up could be symbolic. She could find her self stuck in a well(ok, maybe not a well per se but a situation where your stuck down below), she realizes she doesn't want to die there and suddenly finds herself flying upward as she jumps.

There's a Goosebumps story about the subject called How I learned to Fly. In it, there was Goosebumpsy type plot device with flying dough that you eat.
