This has to be one of the things I HATE more than anything else about job interviews. Specifically when they say they will call you back to let you know and then...don't. It is just so unnecessary. They could just say something like "We have lot of people to look at and will give you a call if you made it to the next step."
However, that is almost NEVER the way it plays out. I can't count how many times I've had people interview me and say clear as day that they'd call me back only for...nothing.
I should be used to it by now, but the latest time it had happened is still stinging. Basically I had an interview out of state and drove over three hours for it. They told me upfront about the salary and I would be paid less than what I am making at my current full-time job. Plus, I had more than the qualifications for it and knew I would kick ass at it. So I go through the interview process and at the end they say they will let me know by the end of the week. The end of the week comes and...nothing.
It's just kind of depressing to be honest and has really bummed me out for the past few days.

Everything you just said applies exactly to a job I interviewed for last week. Probably overqualified, interview panel loved me, they said they'd call me last Wednesday.
Unless they meant this Wednesday, I'm going to remain very annoyed.

Some places do that just to see if you are motivated to make the first move and call them.

Yeah I'm going through the post-graduation job hunt at the moment and it's unbelievable how many places either ignore your application completely or don't contact you after an interview.

I haven't had a single response to any applications since I got this job - it kind of weirds me out, actually.

Some places do that just to see if you are motivated to make the first move and call them. Surprisingly, according to all job-hunting tips I've ever read, calling them first annoys most businesses greatly. Basically, if they ACTUALLY mean it, they WILL call you back.

Some places do that just to see if you are motivated to make the first move and call them. Yeah, I just sent them a little poke via e-mail earlier today just in case. Still, not expecting anything out of it, but it never hurts to try. Edit: Just wanted to mention that I didn't actually call them but just sent a friendly little e-mail as I've heard the same thing about calling businesses.

I think people say that out of some misguided attempt at being nice.
Job interviews on the whole are kind of a sham. They basically just want to see if they THINK you'll fit in. They can see you qualifications on your resume and any asinine question they ask you is just fodder to get a vibe for you.

When they tell you that they will call you to let you know that's like when a girl says that you're better as friends, no way are you getting that ass job.

Yeah I'm going through the post-graduation job hunt at the moment and it's unbelievable how many places either ignore your application completely or don't contact you after an interview. Yep. I've said it before, but I've been out of school two years and I keep encountering this. To say it's frustrating would be the understatement of the century. What pisses me off the most is getting "you're overqualified" e-mails. I've replied to some of these people telling them I would sweep the floors, whatever they want me to do. No luck, though. At this point, it's looking more and more like I should just lie and say I didn't get a college degree.

It's happened to me quite a bit. Unfortunately...from prior experiences 9 times out of 10 it means you didn't get the job. I'm not saying it will happen in your case...but I think it's one of their ways of telling you that.

I was promised a call once...got an e-mail a month after the fact.
They said no, by the way. Shocking, I know.

Maybe you should follow up with an email after an interview, thank them for the opportunity and express interest.

I worked in big box retail, and I was involved in interviewing potential employees. There was just no way we could contact every single person we had to say no to - just a numbers game. We'd have between five and eight interviews for one potential opening (multiplied by the number of openings at the store at any given time), which would be selected from a pool of 300-400 active applicants. Even if there was only one job available, there'd still be 200+ applicants for it. Plus, (this was a minor thing compared to sheer numbers, but it's also a thing) there's always a chance that the person we selected wouldn't work out for whatever reason (got another offer, availability changed, couldn't pass a drug test, etc.) so even if we select someone from the interview process, it'd take a week or two to know whether or not they could actually work out.
