If I remember correctly they do it because they think people will get bored if the promo goes on for too long with just the backstage shot. They do it to kind of break it up... or something.

That's the weirdest logic ever: "I think people are getting bored with these long, scripted backstage segments." "OK, let's keep the segments the same and cut to shots of the crowd watching it to break it up more."

I think they do them because they to remind viewers that they are watching a live show. These segments are usually taped. WWE thinks we have no attention span, so they cut to the crowd every 20 seconds to remind us that this is a live show.
I hate them because they remind me how much more calmer a wwe audience is these days.

It was ok before, but Monday felt like they did it more often. Often enough that it got annoying.

I figured it was to show the people at home that the audience does see what happens backstage so if they buy a ticket they wont miss anything.
