What's with WWE cutting to the audience...pardon me...the WWE Universe during backstage segments? From a production standpoint, it doesn't do much to go from the actual segment to seeing the backs of a bunch of random people as they watch the segment on the tron. It's like they want the home viewing audience to know that people are actually paying attention in the arena, which - granted - isn't so easy to do in the 3-hour Raw era. They did it on Monday's show with the Dr. Shelby skit and the Rock 'N Sock reunion, and it just irritates me...even more so than the red light/blue light treatment the crowd gets during every Raw/Smackdown. But I won't event get started on that! Does this bother anybody else?

I f***ing hate those cuts to the crowd.
It really distracts me from watching the promo or getting into it when they constantly cut to the crowd watching the titantron.
Like if I give a flying f*** what the crowd is doing... Does the production team expect me to be wow'd by knowing that the audience is doing the same f***ing thing I'm doing at home?
It's so annoying.

I remember reading a decent reason why the production team does it but I can't recall it right now. It something along the line with showing the TV audience that the people in the crowd are watching the promo intently and it helps the viewing experiences. I find it annoying but they have a reason.

Noticed that quite a bit on Monday. Thought it was odd

I've also noticed when they have someone like Orton coming out or talking, they break away and show some good looking chick standing to look at him like, "Oh he's so cute!". They've been doing that more lately for some reason. It's not that they do it that irritates me, it just seems so obvious. I know they're trying to get chicks not watching WWE already to be more interested, but really if it was me, I don't care who else thinks someone is cute. I can decide that on my own, thank you very much.

That is a terrible trait, one of many the current era of WWE's production has.
I mean, really, just imagine some of those classic promos in pro-wrestling, specifically the WWE, and how much better they'd be if we got to see a shot of the crowd randomly during them.
What, you mean none of them would be better?
Shock and freakin' awe.

I thought it was to continue with the "live" feel.

I hate it, but I also hate it when they have the audience audible during backstage segments, period. They already write it without thinking of audience reaction, hence tons of times when you can't even hear what a wrestler is saying after the crowd pops. It's illogical. Just do the TNA thing, have really nice pre-taped shit and then let the crowd pop after.

I remember them first doing it last year during one of the Rock's rebuttal promos to Cena.
At the time, it made sense because he went all serious and the crowd cuts help sell how dramatic it was.
The stupid thing is, they kept doing it.

I dislike this too, just because the crowd looks so passive.
And don't get me wrong, I don't blame the crowd one bit. If I was there live staring up at an intense promo I'd probably be silently listening trying to concentrate on every-word as well, it just doesn't make a great shot to see all these people sitting there in silence, staring up at the thing we were trying to watch before you cut away.
It's bad production, which is strange for the WWE as they usually do very very well production wise

It would be one thing if the audience was going crazy and making a lot of noise when the cameras cut to them, but they always end up looking calm and completely silent. Why would the WWE want to highlight something like that?

It reminds me a little bit of the days when they would show someone like Undertaker or Papa Shango entering the ring and cut to a kid that was completely expressionless: "Would you look at the fear on that youngster's face!"

Why would the WWE want to highlight something like that? I agree. It's especially weird watching stuff from the late 90s where the crowd IS going crazy, or at least kind of buzzing and talking and chattering and stuff. Now, when they show that cut, it's like you're watching a bunch of people in a theater.

I imagined the OP writing his post while the camera pans to the rest of us in the thread sitting patiently to see what comes next.

I hate it. It looks more like the audience is bored instead of paying attention.

Not just these kinds of shots, but I love any crowd shot where my eye lands smack dab on the most bored looking person in the shot. Usually it's a disinterested parent or grandparent with their arms crossed.
