I was thinking this morning about that episode of Freaks and Geeks where Bill talks the gym teacher into letting the geeks pick the teams for softball which leads to Bill's brief moment of triumph where he makes a diving catch.
I would guess we've all had these moments. The one I can think of for myself is the time I scored 2 goals in one game in soccer at recess. I sucked at soccer, in the 6 years of playing almost every day at recess in elementary school, I never scored a goal, but for about a 5 minute moment in time I was Pele. One of my goals I kicked from almost midfield, it just sorta bounced as it got to the goal, but the goalie took his eye off the ball and it bounced off his hand into the goal. The second goal was just a couple minutes later and it was a legit score past the diving goalie. My friends thought I was really good at soccer all of a sudden and started passing me the ball the next few times we played, but I wasn't good and I never scored another goal again. I didn't really care because Baseball was always my sport.
Even if you never played organized sports, I think everyone has had one moment plying in gym class or even horsing around with your friends where you had one brief moment of greatness.

When I was very tiny, I lacked basic skills at this game where people threw a ball over a net and called a name, if the ball wasn't caught, that name would be out.
Well, one day, my entire team was out, and it was me against 10 people. I had not caught a ball up to this point. They threw, and I somehow cuaght it... 3 times. Still lost, but it was a good last stand.

I totally blew ass at basketball.
Couldn't dribble, I COULD shoot free throws but nothing else. I was slow, but I could sorta rebound, but I was so uncoordinated that it was not uncommon for the ball to get stripped from me.
ANYWAY, I got stuck playing in a game when the first center fouled out and the second center was sick with the flu. We were up by 2 with about 3 seconds left and I mauled a guy going for a layup to tie it, rejecting the ball . I totally fouled the dude but the ref didn't call it.
The ball bounced out by midcourt and time ran out.
It was awesome.

During last summer, I and couple of my friends started playing football (soccer) on a local football field. I have never been that good in playing it on the field so I prefer playing as a goalie, but this one time my friend wanted to be the goalie.
I took the ball, set it at some distance from the goal (around 25-30 meters from the goal) and hit a perfect free kick from there. The ball curved towards the goal, hit the crossbar and dropped to the inside of the goal. Awesome.

I suck in all sports but I once got a "Grand Slam" in a baseball game. That felt really awesome and my cousin couldn't believe it. Naturally I started to feel somewhat good about it and overdid my celebrating. He had to bring my down to earth and tell me how bad I was for actually being "too happy". Annoying family of mine.

Everytime I play my younger brother (who has 3 or so inches on me and is strong by a mile) in basketball I lose. But there are 2-3 possessions every game where I make some ridiculous shots or just nice basketball plays.
I take the basketball talent of Kareem for a min and poof it leaves me.

I'm not the best basketball player in the world, but once I hit three consecutive shots standing backwards, which was sort of the thing to attempt in our gym class.

i was just ok at sports really and I have a friend that to this day will bring it up on occasion that we were in the "outfield" during a softball game in gym class, just talking, not too terribly interested in the game when the batter hit a potential home run and they called out my name since it was headed toward me and without turning away from our conversation, I simply stuck my hand up and caught the ball.
I don't really recall that happening, but I trust him and will take his word.

I am horrible at baseball/softball. I enjoy watching baseball but was never good at playing it. Anyway,my Freshman year of college,I played intramural softball with my dorm floor. I got stuck playing catcher for some reason but that's not related to the story. Anyway,I was at bat and I had not hardly made contact all year. The pitch came and it was like I was zoned in on it perfect. I swung and not only made contact but I sent it over the right field wall. I stood there in disbelief for a second because even I couldn't believe what I had done. Then to top it off, when they retrieved the ball I hit,I apparently knocked the cover off the ball. I don't take full credit for that as I'm guessing it was coming loose anyway but I still take partial credit. They actually let me keep the ball and I still have it. I may have had one hit more the rest of the season but I had that brief moment of glory.

Basketball is a sport I'm not too good at (I play because it's the law in Indiana). But I won a school-wide free throw contest; got a little plaque and some slight recognition as the best in my age group at my school. And I really hate free throws, probably the worst part of my game. Still do.

I was a terrible volleyball player in 7th grade gym class until one day it was my turn to serve and I served 12 straight times to the point where the ball wasn't even being returned and the rest of my team sat down. It was my singular moment of glory as a volleyballer.

I was always great at sports but I was usually never in the top 10 in getting picked at sports since I was never super popular in school. But I was once picked 1st in handball a game I totally rule in. Also me usually better in sports than all of the popular players got me HEATZ for sure. Like I would often get the silent treatment when I lead the winning comeback against the so called dream team teams. Not sure if this counts for anything but it's the only way I can relate.

I was always pretty bad at baseball, but I had times where I'd go into this trance and play ridiculously well. One practice I remember making at least 4 crazy diving grabs in left field. For some reason they never wanted me to pitch, I think it's because I was a big kid, but one of the few games I started I had 12 strikeouts. A few walks too, but whatevs. Other than these moments, I was pretty shit. Bad hitter (i did hit a homerun once!), too slow to play third, not much of an outfielder.
In basketball I was always a garbage player. Took charges, rebounded, played defense. Barely ever scored. One time in 6th grade we had intermural basketball games between each of the classes, and I was just a dominant force down low and scored a ton of points because of it. Our team won the tournament handily and I won MVP.

I mentioned that I suck at soccer, but also suck at basketball. This one time though, my Little League Baseball team had end of the year party inside a church gymnasium and we started playing basketball. I was draining threes. I think I hit five 3 pointers in a row and scored over 20 points in the game. Everybody on my baseball team thought I was a really good basketball player, but I became like on Seinfeld where Jerry recounts winning "The Big Race" in school and how he refused to race again since his legend had been built and he would lose if he raced again. The next year they were playing basketball again, but I found an excuse to get out of playing so that I wouldn't be unmasked as a crap basketball player and maintain my reputation with my baseball teammates.

I was absolutely horrible at baseball but my brother was decent and it was how I bonded with my dad, so I had to put up with it. I think my lifetime batting average was .025. I came up in the championship game of our 14-16 league, was absolutely terrified to be up there and hit a sacrifice fly that tied the game in the 8th inning, and we won the next inning. Only moment of glory I ever had, but it was nice.

I kinda put myself in the same boat. (Hence why I struggled to find something I wasn't that good at.) I wasn't popular with the popular kids and was usually picked next-to-last because they just didn't want me on their team. (I would get picked ahead of the guys who couldn't play worth a crap, so I was at least acknowledged as halfway decent.) I was better than some of the guys picked ahead of me. (My main sports were baseball, kickball and dodge ball. Oh, how I loved dodge ball.) Politics, I tell ya.

I was ok at basketball in school, but no where close to the "A" group in 8th grade. So i would have to play on the"B" court ask the time. I was tall for my age, so I was a defensive machine, blocking shots all over the place.
I was the mvp of group B, even though i was only good because it is easy to steal when people don't know how to dribble. Or easy to block when people don't know how to pump fake. My greatness was always exposed when they would move me up to the A court.

I've sucked at all sports I have ever played, but I was asked to play in a game of cricket once (despite not knowing too much of the sport, as it is not too common in U.S. obviously) and managed to hit a sixer ( is that what its called?) , to everyones shock and delight
