IWRG had a great year last year. And wasn't it just 2 or 3 years ago that Mistico won wrestler of the year in the WON awards?

In America, it's a joke. In Canada, it's a tradition. In Japan, it's a sport. In Mexico, it's a religion. I remember it was both a still pic and a gif. The gif has all the respected wrestlers from each region(I remember it had Benoit pre-murder). When it shows America, it shows someone getting their face put onto Vince's ass(I think Shawn Michaels). I thought it was Stu Hart for Canada.

I remember trying to watch AAA for a while, the only guy I could really get into was Charly Manson, though.
Judas Mesias was the champion at the time, Silver King had blown up to ultra-roid proportions since his WCW days, and La Parka II was getting his mask ripped off every damned week.

Lucha's great. But like Puro and US wrestling, some promotions are better than others.
In other words, I only watch AAA sparingly for a reason, but I love IWRG and like CMLL.

Could someone post that gif? The "In Japan, it's a sport; in Mexico, it's a religion ..... " I hate to break it to everybody, but wrestling is sort of a joke everywhere. Granted I've only seen wrestling live in the US, Japan and Mexico so I cannot speak about Canada. My girlfriend is originally from Mexico and we saw a AAA show a few years ago when visiting her family. The angles were quite possibly more absurd than anything WWE does. I've been to Japan twice on business. The first time I saw a Hustle event which was the most idiotic thing I've ever seen. Seriously, it made WWE look like masterpiece theater. The second time I saw an Osaka Pro show that had terrible gimmicks, but the wrestling was really, really good. Guess what? There were only about 300 people there. So it's kind of goofy to just single out the WWE's joke angles and declare that we Americans don't take it seriously. Wrestling is like a live action comic book so it's hard to take fake fighting seriously a good portion of the time.

Osaka Pro runs 4 times a week or more in the same building and therefore draws less. But you have to remember that they have a very low overhead and make money.

For those curious, a guy who used the account Apple Shampoo made that gif too. You can see his tag in the top right corner at the end of it fade in. I remember seeing it when he first made it years ago, crazy to think it's traveled as much as it has.

I've tried watching AAA on occasion on Telemundo (or is it Univision? I always get the two mixed up). Honestly, it's pretty good wrestling, a little obvious and staged, but generally well-executed. The crowd has been terrible everytime I watch, though. The arena is always HUGE, but nobody ever seems to get excited for moves or anything. Anytime the action goes to the outside, people just stay in their seats. It's weird.

Wrestling is like a live action comic book so it's hard to take fake fighting seriously a good portion of the time. I think the gif was referring more to the way wrestlers are treated rather than the storylines(although the Vince ass kind of worked against that). Japanese wrestlers and luchadors are treated with much more respect in their countries than North American(Canada blurs together in this case) wrestlers are. In Japan and Mexico, you don't have people chomping at the bit to yell "fake!" the way they do here. People here who are not wrestling fans seem to have a really strong hatred of the sport. Compare that to finding wrestling results in Japanese newspapers and luchadors being treated with respect when they go on talk shows. They are seen as silly but they are not torn apart the way the media in America does when given the chance.
