"The games industry is the only one I can think of that will quite happily publish guesswork as news. So-called ‘analysts’ are no different - they make money by guessing. They’re about as much use as a ‘source’ as I am."
Actually, sports journalism can be just as bad. Just look at Mel Kiper's job.

Sorry, this guy is kind of an asshole even with the point he's trying to prove. Super self-righteous, and he gets all pissy at the CVG editor for not taking the bait when he was supposed to.

No Microsoft employee would list themselves as "excited gamer/Microsoft employee"
Easily would have called BS on that.

And a lot of the sites says right there "it is rumor or speculation" most do not report it as truth. I think a lot of it happens because as a hobby gamers are huge in to "what if" scenarios and speculation.

I think a lot of it happens because as a hobby gamers are huge in to "what if" scenarios and speculation. Exactly. All this guy proved is that the sites will willingly spread a RUMOR(because you know, that's how rumors f***ing work), but will label it as such. They never said it was flat out actual confirmed news. Now, sometimes they will, but most of the time until officially confirmed they put the rumor tag on all news/tips they get.

Whatever point this guy was making was completely undermined when he got pissy at Crossley for doing exactly what the guy was supposed to be encouraging.
He was out to make a name for himself and failed.

Never read a sports news article, have you? Or seen a Fox News bulletin. And what about tabloids, which frequently don't even bother with "one source"? You see, while it is terrible that it happens, it is unfortunately not exclusive to gaming journalism and isn't fair to claim that ALL gaming news sites are like that (for instance, Kotaku and Gamasutra have a pretty good track record IIRC). The race for a scoop tends to make journalists less and less thorough in checking the veracity of their info or the reliability of their source because any second lost doing that gives other news outlets an opportunity to publish a news before you, and we can't have that, truth be damned. At worse, if you've been lied to, just issue a half-assed apology and move on not changing a thing, but most of them just publish the story describing it as a rumor so they can say "well we didn't say it was true, we only heavily implied it" if it turns out to be BS. Sorry guys but people come to you to get info on facts; if you aren't sure of what you claim, don't bother reporting it. The problem isn't just a gaming journalism thing, it's present in journalism as a whole and unless the profession starts taking drastic measures to improve, it's going to stay that way And here are a few example of this kind of stuff in various news outlets: www.cracked.com/article_19789_5-clearly-fake-news-stories-that-fooled-media.htmlAaaand there goes his credibility. It's hard to be taken seriously when accusing gaming journalists of being unprofessional when you spread lies and stretch the truth yourself AND get mad a journalists for actually checking their facts.

Yeh...the point of what he did was to see who checks the fact...and he gets mad when the man does indeed checks the source? Credibility lost.
