Anti-counter culture has become counter culture. All the real renegades wear plaid sweaters and listen to Lawrence Welk.

Individualism is the new counter-culture but it isn't. By nature, individualism isn't counter-culture. But it's counter to everything.
It's the idea of "I can be whatever I feel like."

Being as generic as possible. Strangely not having a tattoo, outlandish clothing/facial hair (men), dyed hair, body piercings etc
Traditional clean living without taking it too far by going into straight-edge/abstinence style movements.
It's difficult to things that people would do/enjoy rather than what they wouldn't do.

Going off the Grid and being a rugged Mountain Man.
The shift towards the "If it feels good do it"/"anything goes" culture in the West has made what most people think of as "Counter culture" effectively moot.

Counterculture is pretty much just a response to what mainstream culture is supposed to be. Its own popularity doesn't invalidate its status as counterculture. The free love and hippie movements of the 60's were massively popular but they were still a counterculture to the establishment.

If being an outsider is mainstream, being mainstream must be the new outsider. Bieber fans in Aeropostale and Vans are the new hipsters now.

I guess this all depends on how old you are and what people of what age group and background you run with because most of this stuff is pretty damn counterculture from where I'm looking. Also, this thread gives me bad vibes, like it's just teeter-tottering on the edge of more "hipster" bashing (one of this forum's favorite pasttimes).

I wouldn't say so, so much, since one of the biggest contributors to counter-culture is one of the elements we can't speak of here.

Counter-culture is and will always be about thinking for yourself. The moment you're doing something mainly or purely because other people are doing it and you want to fit in, you're subverting individual will to the whims of mainstream mentality and are going with the predominant culture rather than against it.

People who seem to band together for (or against) a cause are all counter-culture.
That is probably the most delicate way I can put it without getting into unspoken topics.
