He's limited his appearances both on TV in his corporate roll and has actually wrestled less frequently -- in major matches on PPVs.
I think HHH sees himself in that Taker/Brock/Rock stratosphere of guys who can come back once or twice or maybe three times a year and give PPV sales a bump -- that when he shows up in the ring it's a special must-see attraction.
I'm assuming he'll face Brock at WM, but I don't think it's so much a "get his win back" ego thing as a "if I'm in a high-profile match it will be a can't-miss proposition for those who are on the fence as to whether to buy the PPV or not" -- still an ego thing but of a different sort.
I know he takes a lot of heat on forums from people -- including me -- but to casuals I think he's still considered a badass they like to see. I know a lot of casuals who feel this way.
So the point: is this how Helmsley seees himself, and is that a realistic self-image?

I know it sounds daft, but I doubt he'll be back for 'Mania as...
His hair is still being cut weekly or bi-weekly. For some reason it'd seem insane to see Triple H come out with bob length hair (at max) at 'Mania. Though it'd make me laugh.
On top of that I think he's too smart to think of himself as a Brock/Rock, as I'm sure he's got the buyrates to prove that he is not that type of superstar, but he probably is a "break glass in case of emergency" special attraction if a guy in a main event gets injured and they need someone with star power to fill in and have no other options.

He shows up too much, I think. For him to be a special attraction, he'd need to go away for longer than a month in between visits and on-screen interviews. You don't see Undertaker at Be a Star conventions doing PR work. Trips could have his part in these events not shown in video packages they show every week on television and it'd greatly increase reactions to his appearances.

He probably still is; he's still undeniably over with the crowds, but for me, as much as he's in my top ten all time favorites, I don't need to really see him play the Game character anymore.
Hell, I'd love if the short hair meant a transition to an authority figure character that appeared sporadically. Like an ass kicking Jack Tunney.

I think he/WWE is working at it. It wasn't until the second WM match with Michaels that Taker started in that role and Triple H has been on a lot more than that in the last few years. As time goes on and he's on less and less he'll mean a lot more.
The crowd still cares about him (don't take that as loves him mind you) and want to see him whether he's getting his ass kicked or is the one kicking ass. Just look at what he did with Brock and Taker, two of the best drawing feuds in 2012 if not the top two.

I think the hair cut signaled his retirement.

I think he is a special attraction to most fans, despite sore ire from the IWC. For the past two years he's been in the Streak match at Mania. This after two years of Shawn Michaels being in the match (and making it mean even more). Now he's got to get his win back against Brock in Brock's big Mania match. At least I assume. Seems like Hunter has booked himself to be in three huge Mania spots for the past three years (again, assuming this year's match). I think Hunter should be putting over Punk before Lesnar puts him over at Mania. Does Hunter need that? I guess Hunter's ego does in fact need that. He lost two WrestleManias in a row and a SummerSlam match to Brock. So, yes, he has jobbed a lot. I'll give him that.
