Cena/Punk from MITB was the match that rekindled my long dormant love of pro wrestling. As far as I am concerned, both guys deserve tons of praise for that match. I can't, with a good conscience, jump on the "Cena Sucks" bandwagon.
I do get the frustration with being tired with the same character and would agree that a "Hollywood Hogan"-esque heel run could only boost his standing even more.

I feel like Cena is the Shawn Michaels of his generation. A workhorse that held the fort down and had good matches with just about everybody but still didn't get the respect until after he was gone.
Atleast he isn't being called gay by the fans like HBK was.......wait.
(I'm not comparing Cena and Michaels' talents. Before someone decides to rant.)

He put on a great match with Umaga and carried Khali to possibly his only passable match. That's saying something.

I dunno, he still doesn't even do his STFU right after all this time. One move. One move executed less than perfect and that disqualifys him from being considered one of the best? Hell, I've seen Chono himself apply the STF the exact same way from time to time. No, just a pet peeve of you'd think he'd get it right one of these days.

Triple H condemning him during their feud didn't help matters. Especially given that, Cena didn't even defend himself on that front. Hell, he could have pointed out that Triple H hadn't been "a good wrestler" for over 5 years at that point. So from there on out, the "you can't wrestle" nonsense actually escalated. It's especially funny because for most of the last decade I think Cena's outshone Triple H in just about every category but hardcore brawls.

Or it could easily be a WWE thing.
It's well known Vince is all about facial expressions and eyes in wrestling. Cena applying it the way he does makes for an easy view into the opponent's 'agony' any lower and it's a choke hold. Nearly killed Chris Masters the first time.

Cena's 2007 run proved he could have good matches with any guy, he still has holes in him (obvious one is selling) but he's got a few dozen great matches under his belt. This past year he's had good - great matches with everyone.
He's great to have, but I think the emotional side of wrestling (which is necessary to tell a story) can become neutered when you insert Cena into a match just because he hasn't taken a significant break in years. People get tired of seeing the same guys in similar spots, which does effect how people view him.

Like the last thread(about Cena being a company man I think), this is not the problem, and I don't think it is for a lot of people, yes there are "YOU CAN'T WRESTLE" chants, but I think it's mostly to say "we're chanting against you but not because you're a heel, because please, go away forever we actually hate you". I'd even go as far as to say that his promo skills are overrated, seeing he does the same thing almost all the time.

Cena's wrestling is pretty damn good.
Cena's character is fine as it is, including the poopy jokes, etc.
The problem with Cena is that he's constantly seen as the center of the universe and the be and end all of the WWE. If you kept him the same, but dialed him back out of the spotlight and into upper midcard, he probably wouldn't be so hated.
