...does not get the credit he deserves. Yes, I'm finally condeding a bit on his booking, which is bad- but I think it's blinded a good portion of fans from how talented the individual behind the character really is.
I get that fans are bored with the way he's written. He's been in only a handful (ok, maybe a couple of handfuls) of moments where his back was to the wall as a character, and outside of that his scripts refuse to let anything get him down. And it has detracted from some of the drama in some (not all) of his storylines.
But just purely as someone who can carry lesser guys to good matches and put on classics/near classics with guys as good as him, and as a talker that can hype up a show- putting aside his writing completely for a moment- has he not proven he's arguably the best in the company? On his best nights, I don't think Jericho, Christian or Punk can touch him.
I think it's a reflection on his skill level that he does have so many people behind him with the role he's asked to play.

I don't think many people here insult Cena's wrestling ability. When he is motivated he can pull off great matches.

On his best nights, I don't think Jericho, Christian or Punk can touch him. That's stretching it. I do agree that he is very good in the ring and a lot of people do overlook that but I would not say he's the best.

Cena is a highly skilled performer who can cut effective promos that get people in the building.
Shame he's limited by unnecessary comedy and no character development.

I dunno, he still doesn't even do his STFU right after all this time.

Dude is talented as hell, but he gets the worst script to try to work with and seems stuck in a character that has nowhere to go.

I dunno, he still doesn't even do his STFU right after all this time. One move. One move executed less than perfect and that disqualifys him from being considered one of the best? Hell, I've seen Chono himself apply the STF the exact same way from time to time.

He's a fantastic performer, just as Hogan was, but god damn is his character played out to the max. He desperately needs a "Hollywood Hogan"-esque re-invention.

Unless he's with a very talented opponent, I can't get into his matches. 90% of the time he's on cruise control and doesn't mix-up his routine enough for my tastes. That said, I think he's as every bit as talented as the Rock (this coming from a long time Rock fan).

I'm wouldn't be surprised if the same Cena that many smarks like - the Cena that feels like he's taking things seriously, the Cena that puts on a good to great main event match, the Cena that cuts a legitimately good to great promo to sell a PPV - is the same Cena that everyone else prefers. If Cena stopped having the grating, phony, poopy joking personality from here on out, I doubt he'd lose a single fan.

I agree 100% with this. I think if it was not for the bad booking he's behind and being someone everyone looks when people talk about the wrongs with WWE because he's THE GUY, I think everyone would unanimously say he's the best thing they have.

That's what I've never gotten. He delivered a match with The Rock that gets WAAAAY more flack than it deserves, and not to mention delivered a five-star classic with CM Punk at MiTB last year which if you think it's because "Punk carried him" you're way off. You cannot "carry" someone to a match that damn good.

I think most people give him the credit he deserves. I mean, he's had some many good matches to continue saying "Cena can't wrestle" makes you look like a fool. However... On his best nights, I don't think Jericho, Christian or Punk can touch him. No. Lord no.

Triple H condemning him during their feud didn't help matters. Especially given that, Cena didn't even defend himself on that front. Hell, he could have pointed out that Triple H hadn't been "a good wrestler" for over 5 years at that point. So from there on out, the "you can't wrestle" nonsense actually escalated.

He's good, but he wouldn't be in my top 10 list of best wrestlers ever.

Cena is a mediocre talent imo. However, he has a ton of charisma. He's not a bad wrestler really, just a really limited one compared to the rest of this generation. That was ok in 2003 when he was a small part of the show. 10 years later when he's been consistently booked as the top guy and it sucks.

For me, he's one of the best going today because he's completely efficent in there.
There's absolutely no wasted movements and he rarely botches. The only other guy that has a rep close to that is Christopher Daniels. He brings more than his share to the table. He drug decent to good matches out of Lashley and Khali and Umaga worked with Triple H and Punk but never had better matches then the one's against Cena.

I'm sorry, I disagree. His promos are childish and rambling at times. His wrestling ability is clunky and sloppy. Yes he can have good matches, mainly when the other guy is freaking amazing. I know he has more than five moves, but not much more. His character is beyond stale, and pretty bland. It is representative of how boring and bland PG WWE is while still "edgy" because of poop jokes. I don't blame Cena for this, and if he was in the midcard, I wouldn't mind, but there's just too much Cena, and none of it's good.
