www.ign.com/articles/2013/02/04/sony-discontinues-the-minidisc-formatIf we're being totally honest, today's news comes as a bit of a shock. Not because Sony has decided to stop producing MiniDisc devices after March 2013, but rather, it's the idea anyone is still using a MiniDisc. According to BBC News, Sony will manufacture the final MiniDisc stereo systems next month.
The MiniDisc, like so many forgotten media formats, had a hard time catching on globally. Back in 1992, the MiniDisc seemed like a promising way to record audio with long-lasting clarity, in comparison to the ever-degrading cassette tape. Still, the rise of the CD-R -- and ultimately, MP3 -- would overshadow Sony's little plastic-shielded disc everywhere but Japan.I can't believe this was still around. Then again, they did just discontinue the cassette WalkMan.

I will say this, although I don't use it myself, I know plenty of journalists who swear by it for recording interviews and concerts. The niches this is going to affect is going to affect them huge.

So MiniDisc was basically the grandfather of the UMD? I've never used a MiniDisc, but it's kinda sad how it looks to be way better than UMDs.

I remember getting a MiniDisc player back in the day and thought it was the greatest thing ever, because you could record and re-record on it just like on a CD... but if you didn't like a track, you could remove it, replace it with something else.. and keep everything else the way it was. My friends and I swore it was the wave of the future, and soon everyone would have a Minidisc player.
Then the Ipod came out a year later.....

My friend at college had a minidisc player, and he had a helluva time getting anything to actually play. I think he resorted to live recording people's CDs, actually. Also, he was allergic to eggs. Hi Mark!
