Kind of hard to say what is Australia's quintessential passtime. The country is pretty divided between AFL, Rugby and Cricket. Either way it's a huge story and and completely buried the broken chairs story from the Melbourne football/soccer debry over the weekend which is the only upside cause the media were going a little bit too far with that one.
