Saturday Tourneys are EVIL!
FNM(Friday Night Magic) on the other hand is more Chaotic Neutral. I got In and out again most recently due to the Avacyn Block that just wrapped. The "Gothic Horror" stuff REALLY didn't sit well with me (I've been playing off and on since around the FIRST Ice Age/Arabian Nights/Weatherlight).
I personally run a Black/Green "Infect" deck, with a couple Cards with Proliferate. It's not Tourney-Legal anymore (It's cycled out) but the color Dynamic in the Phyrexian Block really lent itself to some odd combos.
I REALLY wish My Lorwyn/Eventide Deck was legal.....that thing was a damn BEAST. It was a Mono-Blue "Mill" deck that could force a 10+ card discard direct from deck. I called it Snowball, because if you let it get going momentum would crush you....and you'd never take damage.

Wow. Thanks for all the advice and discussion, guys! I've been under the weather, so I haven't been able to go out and buy any cards yet. I had watched one video that said he liked to use 2 different colors to give a little variety, but so it doesn't get to be too much. I may try that out initially to see if it works, and if not I'll move on to what does. I'm lucky enough who has a friend who's been into trading cards... forever, pretty much. As long as I've known him, at least. So I'll be able to play with him for a while, and he knows some guys at a local card shop, so that'll be nice.

I want to start playing too. Which product should I buy? a 2013 event deck? Or a Fat Pack? The last edition is good?

If your starting a fat pack has everything you need (9 boosters, enough land and rules) an event deck is usually more specific. If you think you know you like a particular colour already then an intro pack could be useful.

Also, if you have the option of picking up those two-player beginner packs, pick up a few of those. Four of those packs are about the same price as a fat pack (give or take a couple of bucks) and you get about a dozen more uncommon cards and a bunch more commons. The negative is you get one less rare, and no fancy box to put them in.

All this talk of Magic has inspired me to order a few boosters. Ah the excitement of opening a pack what will it contain, will it be something I might actually have a use for plus that new booster pack aroma.

Yeah I had played it with friends back in the day using their decks and only recently started buying my own. I started with buying the 2013 starter pack and fat pack ($40 but I figured I might as well just start with a crap ton of cards and whittle it down) and made 5 mono-colored decks from that. Once you have the color you think works best for your style, build from there. No deck's going to be perfect but trying to get as close as possible is half the fun, right?
Also agreed on using the duels of the planeswalkers games to get a good feel of how things work. You don't even really need to buy the game if you don't want to - the demo provides a decent enough tutorial on things.

Gambling is all it is with boosters. Do yourselves a favor people, buy singles. You get what you want without wasting a bunch of money on cards you dont want/need.

Aren't the way the little color jewels arranged on the cards the way Richard Garfield thought the best color combinations would be?

Aren't the way the little color jewels arranged on the cards the way Richard Garfield thought the best color combinations would be? Yes, colors that are adjacent tend to synergize well. Though the current block is focusing on opposing colors (yay Ravnica).

My first experience with learning how combat works made me think about how inferior Pokemon's version is.
I thought, "Combat is done simultaneously?", sort of like actual combat whereas Poke-monsters just sit there waiting to be hit.

Aren't the way the little color jewels arranged on the cards the way Richard Garfield thought the best color combinations would be? in theory at least, but the game's changed a lot since it started. the backs have to remain the same forever, though, to keep you or your opponent from figuring out what kind of cards you have in hand. hell, "Deckmaster" doesn't even exist as a company anymore.

Singles are no use for booster/cube draft type games, which are a lot of fun.

plus buying singles is a lot more expensive. Well sure if you're buying Black Lotuses or other awesome cards. You can build awesome decks for less then $20 and is a lot cheaper then trying to build the same deck via boosters.

White is complemented by Green and Blue and opposed by Red and Black, Blue is complemented by White and Black and opposed by Green and Red, etc.

Yet there have been cases where opposites attract. I have seen a LOT of Black/Green decks, for instance. True, but there are more cards in Green and Black that oppose each other. A lot of creatures in Green have Pro:Black, there's a bunch of Black cards that just deal with Green (and/or White) permanents, Green tends to 'buff' creatures and Black tends to 'de-buff', and so on. The two colours throughout the game tend to clash more than blend. There are blocks that like to play with the opposition (Apocalypse, the Ravnica block, etc.) but the trend is that they oppose.
