Not just for Wrestlemania, but for ANY pay-per-view that WWE's put on since mid-2002. I'm trying to think if they've ever been scraping the bottom of the barrel as deeply as Alberto del Rio vs. Jack Swagger.

CM Punk vs. JBL, Summerslam 2008.
Not sure if it's the winner, just throwing out a candidate.

I can't either. The closest I could think of is Rey vs Chavo but Rey's a much bigger star than Del Rio or Swagger.

Jack Swagger vs. Rey Mysterio.
Also last years SmackDown chamber also wasn't exactly star studded with Bryan, Show, Barrett, Rhodes, Marella, and Khali.

It's gotta be Punk/JBL, that's a midcard match where JBL was on his way out and Punk was treated as a fluky midcard champ.
They thought so much of that program that they elevated the belt afterwards and the next one on one match for the title was Jericho/HBK in a ladder match.

You can make a case for Christian vs Del rio at Extreme rules. It was before Del rio was establish and Christian was still viewed on like a mid card guy.

But I feel that the way they took the belt off of Punk made it seem like Punk was a big star that they had to protect and keep from getting pinned. If they weren't high on Punk, they would've just jobbed him out to one of the "real stars".

They didn't even let him into the match, a match where he didn't have to be pinned to lose, so he still could be protected. Basically they took the least important guy out to let Jericho in.

Right, the chaotic nature of the Scramble match is protection enough if that's what they're going for. Taking him out of the match kinda buried the guy. When does that ever happen, a champion getting beat up and just forfeiting the belt?

I love how after I finished reading that post I see a picture of Vince McMahon in your signature.

I mean, I was watching the show and could care less that he was taken out of the match. It was like "Cool, Jericho's going to be in this." Of course Jericho spent the whole match selling that he was dead, so if I think that's an improvement...
