Wow, much better ranking than I thought I'd get after my screwup. Middle of the pack is okay for now, as long as I can step it up later when the numbers get smaller.

Easter Parade- Bing Crosby
Always a great vocalist. Although, I’m going to have to admit a weakness in judging here: Bing Crosby is always a vocalist that works if I’m in the right mood. He’s NEVER bad, don’t get me wrong. I just mean he doesn’t captivate me every time like I know he probably should. It’s more of a listener flaw, I think. I’m on board with the selection, but just realize there is that slight inconsistency in his ability to deliver for me. For what it’s worth, I think you chose a fantastic song that features him. Just don’t come down too hard on me if he doesn’t rock the top of this voting chart. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Backdoor Man- The Doors
Not my favorite Doors song out there, I’m going to have to say. At the same time, I’m anticipating some of the other picks to come through in this clutch vocalist round. I think you chose a very worthy vocal candidate. I do like the Doors. Not one of their strongest here though, that’s all. When I get through some of their songs and the playlist hits this song, it feels more like a bridge piece in a concert that takes me to the rest of their library/setlist for the rest of the show. I know that’s a controversial statement since the song is well-renowned, but that’s how it comes across. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Don't Go Breaking My Heart - Elton John and Kiki Dee
Is this Elton John pick #45? Something like that? Maybe not. It just feels like this is always a go-to artist. I’m supposed to not like this song based on how I approach songs that are similar, but I really do have a weakness for it. It’s just too fun for me to ignore. That being said, I feel that it’s a very safe pick vocally in what is supposed to be a vocal round. I don’t get vocal pizzazz from this song, and quite honestly, one of the song’s appeals in the studio version form is that it is so simple, and it’s that innocence and not-so-flashy approach that actually makes it work for me. So, a bit of a head-scratcher as a choice for this round. In a “The Voice” round, I’m looking for something to blow me away. While I like the song, this doesn’t blow me away with its vocals. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ All Shook Up - Elvis Presley
I was kinda hoping for a live performance when I got to this song title in the queue. However, I’ll gladly take it. There are Elvis songs that flop for me, and there are some that—when they are on fire—are very on fire. I really enjoy this song. I’m sure it’s been played a thousand times, but it’s got groove, it’s got the right pacing for the goals of the artist and the song, and the lyrics take a backseat to the vocal swag. In a song that’s got such a simple piano melody, that sets a perfect backdrop to enhance just the smallest, most subtle vocal nuances that’s a part of this song. A lot of people just hear “oh, that song” when this fires up on the radio, but even the ever so slight “uh” that’s thrown in toward the end is just perfect because it’s so soft and not overdone; I would venture to say that it gets overlooked amid the stark dramatic pause after the famous “all shook up” lyric that the song is known for. Anyway, overall, it fits the round well, and I dig it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Call Me When You’re Sober- Evanescence
Possibly a new contestant here who is not aware of how badly I usually deride this vocalist. MOST every song from this band reeks of trying too hard. It’s so mechanical to me, and it feels like a really overdone American Idol audition when I usually hear her sing. So obviously, a pick that irks me a little. I know people just go into “awe” mode when Evanescence is discussed, but I feel that it’s an act that overdoes everything and beats up their songs as much as anything. You know what it’s like to me? It’s like a lot of scenes from the film The Room in terms of the acting. Now, granted, the writing of that film is bad bad, but I’m not talking about that with this band. They actually have some material that would work very well. But the thing is, Amy Lee’s delivery comes across to me as a “You’re tearing me apart, Lisa!” sort of delivery just about every time. Just know the song and deliver a vocal that reflects it. Too overly dramatic and it just takes away from a potentially good song. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Medication- Garbage
Welcome to the stage, Shirley Manson! Everything I said about Amy Lee’s overdramatics? Yeah, here is the perfect alternative to what I was talking about. These vocals are crystal clear, very dramatic, but not overstated to the point of aggravating me. There is flair in the vocal stylings, and again, subtlety rules the roost in a song like this. There is a lot to pick apart with what’s going on, because it’s not so all over the place. I’m not saying simplicity auto-wins this round, because that would be implying the Elvis piece and this Garbage piece are simple. No, she opens the door for evaluation because of how subdued some parts are so that the little inflections here and there stand out all the more. I hope some of the comments I’ve made in other picks look at what I’m saying about this song and at least get where I’m coming from. I’m not trying to sell anyone on Garbage, but I’m just trying to justify why this might edge out some of the others. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dance or Die- Janelle Monae Smooth. I actually don’t know this song. It’s weird how some of the picks that dig deep into the well are some that I’m familiar with. Here you have a song that may very well be quite popular and I just haven’t heard it yet. I think I would have liked to heard more ability from her, but the song itself is not bad at all. I’m a little divided on this one. Overall though, I appreciate the mastery and precision of the lyrics. Not sure there is much range there or variation, especially compared to some of her other songs. I didn’t expect to get floored by people who oversing all their songs, but I figured I’d get a little variation to showcase vocals. We’ll just sit back and see where this one falls. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok, Here’s the Truth- Javier Colon
Hey. It’s that guy. From The Voice. Well, he’s good. I wish for some of my other favorites instead (Javier Colon not at the top of that list) but he does have that silky smooth voice that the category asks for. Glad to see the pick. Good luck on it, and I hope it finds the judges well. It just happens to fall between the cracks a bit from me regardless of the fact that there’s no denying the guy’s vocal prowess. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Girl From the North Country – Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan
Very cool. Very very cool. Yeah, you could say that either one of these artists could be considered a “go to” pick, but the timing with that soundtrack recently coming out is pretty good. It really revived this particular song. It’s also Bob in rare singing form. For that, there is certainly some educational originality that goes toward this pick. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mad Mama Blues- Josie Miles
I’ll catch a little heck for what I’m about to say, so I’ll start by saying in terms of originality for the present, I say nicely done. But as much heck as people catch these days for being copy-cutters in the realm of pop music, I feel like I can rattle off several names from this era who had a similar timbre in their voice and a very similar style from this particular era. I do love this style and this era for what it is, but I still think there are some artists I would turn the radio dial to over this particular track. So I’m judging the song thusly. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Freedom (Live Session)- Paloma Faith
Yes, now this is more along the lines of what I was expecting for this round. Not that expectations equal points, but this is dead on target with the category, and the song itself is hitting on all cylinders. I think we’ve found a “song of the week” candidate here for me to play, replay, and re-replay. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yellow Ledbetter- Pearl Jam
I think the first Pearl Jam song was chosen last season. Took a while, but they got going and here they are again. There are some songs of theirs that stand out as fantastic and some that aren’t at the top of my list. But here, the risk pays off. Yellow Ledbetter is a great song. And one that hits this theme wide open. Well done! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Star Spangled Banner- Whitney Houston
My only comment I can come up with for this is out of ALL the Whitney songs out there that absolutely dominate in many, many ways, this is the one that is chosen? Maybe it was thought of as a bold pick, but I am just left scratching my head here. I don’t get it. The thing I like about it is that it’s Whitney, so yeah, it’s perfect vocally. Can’t deny that. Epic presentation as well, can’t deny that. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- That’s How Strong My Love Is- Otis Redding
That’s some vocal right there. Unmistakably Otis Redding. There is only one way I want to hear this song, and it’s under the voice of this man.
General thoughts: This sometimes happens at pretty much every season at this point in the competition. We have seen some eliminations and those that have had a little taste of the victory that is tied to advancing suddenly get worried that they could be next because they are enjoying themselves and being in the competition up this point. What sometimes SEEMS to happen (not saying that it is happening—just a perception thing) is that judges can be so diverse in how the rankings play out, that contestants start firing off picks that seem to bridge the gaps between what irritates some judges and gets praises from others. I TOTALLY understand that. But sometimes, for me as a judge, that can be a little disastrous because I get a little miffed at the round as a whole. Now, again, I’m not saying that to be overly critical. It’s just a little heads up about trends I’ve seen in the game, and I hope we don’t go down that route at any point. There are songs that some judges are going to go insane for that I will dissect into all kinds of pieces. Likewise, (Fiona’s “Daredevil,” for instance) there are picks that I will still think about WEEKS and WEEKS after they’ve been featured as a landmark work that others will be “meh” about. I understand the concept of playing to win and trying to bridge those judge gaps, but I hope we don’t play the safe route in every round. I love the Daredevil type picks and Paper Planes and the “niche-y” Teagan and Sara and such. While others may not, I have loved the efforts of throwing out there what is true to you, and some of those picks leave me starved for what’s going to pop up next. I mean, I already have favorites to win the whole thing just based on your stylings. On the flipside, J has one of my favorite playlists in the whole game and he’s now eliminated, so you don’t have to take my words here to heart at all. It’s just a commentary, and it’s not advice. I loved almost all of J’s picks (heck, the elimination head-to-head choice is right up there with his round-by-round choices as well), and the ones that are the top of my like list on his list were enough to make me wish he’d go and go and go so that I can have the potential to just go ballistic with a mark-out moment when those songlists hit the judging table.
Here are my rankings:
1. Freedom (Live Session)- Paloma Faith 2. Yellow Ledbetter- Pearl Jam 3. Medication- Garbage 4. Girl From the North Country – Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan 5. All Shook Up - Elvis Presley 6. Star Spangled Banner- Whitney Houston 7. That’s How Strong My Love Is- Otis Redding
8. Dance or Die- Janelle Monae 9. Don't Go Breaking My Heart - Elton John and Kiki Dee 10. Ok, Here’s the Truth- Javier Colon 11. Easter Parade- Bing Crosby
12. Backdoor Man- The Doors 13. Mad Mama Blues- Josie Miles 14. Call Me When You’re Sober- Evanescence

We have most of the songs sent in for Round 10: We Are Family. We'll do the Elimination Sing-Off and play Round 10 out but I'll announce Round 11's category now since I think this may be one of the most demanding rounds thus far. As always, you can send me the picks and I'll hold on to them until the proper time. The theme for Round 11 is... Pictured: A man who once threw a live chicken into an audience and a man who made a fortune frying them up Strange BedfellowsChoose one song that features two or more artists collaborating that do not often work together. Any genre, time period, level of professional achievement, recorded or live, etc. The artists must not work with each other on a regular basis, so no duos like Simon and Garfunkel or Supergroups like the Wu-Tang Clan unless someone who doesn't normally perform with them joins them in a song. So, if the Wu-Tang Clan recorded a song with Eminem, for example, that would be legal but not if it's just the Wu-Tang Clan with the regular 9 or so members. The collaboration can be fulfilled in multiple ways: a duet, a guest role playing an instrument or providing the vocals, even producing IF it's notably from the artist (so, Dr Dre or Moby could produce a song and leave a huge mark on that song). A sample? Maybe. I'll allow it but it's up to the judges to decide how they would score it.

More seriously though, I forgot how sing-offs go. DO we still have a theme or can we send whatever we want?

The sing-off doesn't have a theme. Normal rules about repeat artists and songs still apply.

Waiting to hear from the Elimination Sing-Off contestants.
So, want to know something really neat? Looking over the list of Round winners, outside of fw91 winning one round and being part of the winning Duet Round team and Canctus Fraggle surviving two Elimination Rounds, there hasn't been a single repeat round winner. 9 rounds and 9 different winners. So, when I say that anyone currently in the game can win this thing, I truly mean it.

1. "Call Me When You're Sober" by Evanescence. I prefer stuff from the first album but this is right up there with the best of that material. Very underrated group.
2. "Medication" by Garbage. I always thought they did harder stuff only so this is refreshing to hear, not that they're a bad group (far from it, in fact).
3. "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" by Elton John and Kiki Dee. f*** YEAH SIR ELTON!!!! It's very hard to score poorly with Elton or his classic stuff like here.
4. "Star Spangled Banner" by Whitney Houston. I know some people will rank this high on sentimental value, but I just rank it high because few people have done the National Anthem this good, EVER.
5. "OK Here's The Truth" by Javier Colon. Nice acoustic work (and I think I know who picked this!).
6. "Girl From The North Country" by Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan. Two of my favorites together. Kinda underwhelming though.
7. "How Strong My Love Is" by Otis Redding. Good but lacks the punch of the song I picked a few seasons ago, "Sittin On The Dock Of The Bay."
8. "All Shook Up" by Elvis Presley. Yes, I know it's a classic, but boy, this is almost the poster child for overplay.
9. "Easter Parade" by Bing Crosby. I think his Christmas stuff sounds better than this. I know it's a risky pick, and with the other judges this may score better but with me it just doesn't work.
10. "Dance Or Die" by Janelle Monae. Generic R+B.
11. "Freedom" by Paloma Faith. Sounds like generic pop.
12. "Yellow Ledbetter" by Pearl Jam. Only two or three songs that Pearl Jam did that I like, and this is not one of them.
13. "Backdoor Man" by The Doors. Never liked Jim Morrison's voice or the band's style.
14. "Mad Mama Blues" by Josie Miles. Never been a big blues fan, and this song has not improved with age.

my round 11 song was sent, hope its slighlty different than my norm I like it and I think it fits that round well. It's a pick, imo, that's different than what you've presented so far without coming off as a pick chosen just for the sake of being different. So, kudos .
