Welcome one and all to Season Eight of F.A.N Idol!
Inspired by reality music television shows like "American Idol" and "The X-Factor", this game is a forum competition that seeks to find that one person who has the musical knowledge, the perseverance, the flat out balls to stand above their talented peers and claim the title of Fan Idol.
Invented by our own Cageking, refined by two time Idol Winner Pegasus Warrior, and hosted by such F.A.N luminaries as the Baldy Kendrick, two time Idol winner Anonymous GM, and "Statman" PKSandman, FAN Idol sets the standard for all our Forum Games in terms of drama, difficulty, and ingenuity.
How do you play F.A.N Idol, you say? (Don't worry, there is a ton of info here. A condensed version is posted here, second post right under the lucha cats at this link:

Time Limit:
Before I go into detail about how the game operates, I want to discuss how time in real life works for this game. Contestants will have a maximum of 3 Days from the moment a round's theme is announced to send in their pick(s). Picks are expected to be in by midnight of the final Day (you will have 3 full days). Since we may all run on different times due to where we live, allowances will be made. Assume that time will be GMT, with this board serving as a clock. If you do not send the pick in time, you will not be credited with a choice for that round. In the first three rounds, that means that you will receive a zero for that round which will go towards the overall total; the first three rounds are added up to determine who faces who in the Sing-Off at the end of the Third Round. In the following rounds, not sending a pick will either deny you the chance to gain an advantage or will send you into the Elimination Round automatically. Please, send picks in if you can. If you come to me and say that you have computer problems or are otherwise unable to send a pick, I will try my best to deal with it in a fair and timely manner. I will likely extend you time but I will move on with the game if people don't get in contact with me.
Basic Structure:
For each round, the Host will post that round's theme in the thread, accompanied with instructions, a deadline to get your choice in, and some picture of sorts to keep things looking pretty. Contestants are to send the Host a PM of their pick via a youtube link. Other links like dailymotion may be accepted but youtube is preferred. In the past, we've had problems with Vevo links so, if it's at all possible, use a youtube link. If the link is approved for that round, the Host will accept the link and place it with the other approved links, pm'ing the judges the links when all are collected. If the link is not approved, the Host will pm the contestant sending it in a timely manner, telling them that they have to choose another song and the reasons for that change.
The links will be sent to the judges anonymously and in alphabetical order. When the judges receive the picks, the Host will post the links in the thread for the edification of the contestants and other thread followers. We can all talk about the picks, what we think is cool, what we think was a great choice, etc. but we cannot talk about who picked what or claim what we picked. Once the judges make their rankings, they will send those rankings to the host, who will then add them up, determine the placement of the songs, and post the results in the thread.
Themes:
Each round will have a theme that your pick(s) must address. At times, the theme will deal with something straightforward like song genre, time period when the song was recorded, or the performer's nationality. At other times, the theme is a bit more abstract, such as themes dealing with a particular emotion, an unusual type of performance such as an acoustic song, the medium where the song appeared in such as a movie or a musical, or concepts like the Captain Planet Challenge, where picks had to address one of the five elements used to create Captain Planet in the television show: Earth, Heart, Fire, Water, and Wind. Judges reserve the right to judge you, at least to some degree, according to how well your song fits the round's theme.
Scoring:
Rounds are scored by the judges from favorite to least favorite pick. If there are three judges, there are three sets of scores, four would have four sets, etc. A judge's first place pick will earn a score based on the total of songs sent in for a round. So, for example, in a round where 12 songs were sent, a judge's first place song would earn 12 points, while a judge's last place song would earn 1 point. All song picks will earn at least 1 point from each judge. The judge's scores are combined to determine the total points a pick earned for each round.
Number of picks per round:
Your standard round will ask for one pick for one category. As the game progresses, you will see rounds asking you for two, three, or four picks. You may have several categories per round or a round that asks you to make multiple picks for a given category. The final will ask you for Eight Picks. Typically, the categories will be judged separately. So, for example, a round that contains four different categories will have four different groups. Asked for one pick each for categories, judging would look like this (example asks for four songs for four different categories from four contestants), with each judge putting the choices from favorite to least favorite.
There may be rounds that call for multiple picks that are judged as one category, however.
What Songs can you pick? Ok, this has evolved throughout Idol history and, at this point, we are going to approach this much the same way we did in Idol Season VII. There are two restrictions placed upon contestants in terms of possible song selections:
1. An artist can only be used once a Season unless otherwise stated. As the game progresses, I will maintain a list of all the artists used so far in the competition to be found in the OP. Players cannot use the same artist twice a game, either artists that they have used themselves or artists used by other players. So, if a competitor used a song by Beyonce in Round 3, no one can use a song by Beyonce for the rest of the competition unless otherwise noted in a round.
It's a little fuzzy when it comes to people who perform in different bands or have gone solo. For instance, Eric Clapton has played in bands like Cream, the Yardbirds, Blind Faith, and Derrick and the Dominoes, as well as performing as a solo artist. So, technically, all those different bands can be used in a single competition. However, judges reserve the right to score lower if they choose so if they feel an artist, in this manner, has been used too often,
2. You cannot use a song already used in a past FAN Idol Season. We are looking for a diverse pool of songs. It doesn't serve the competition well if contestants can go through the past Idol seasons and pick songs that did well. So, consult the list provided to see if a song is viable. I will flat out refuse to allow you to use a past pick and will pm you in a timely manner that you must choose again. I do not do this to be mean, only to help make the game play out to the best of my ability. To clarify, you can use any other single song from an artist, just make sure it hasn't been used yet. You can also use cover songs from a different artist (there may be cases if the case is that the original hasn't been used yet but only the cover so the original is fair game, as is other covers) if the song has already been used. For example, my buddy Cageking cites using Pink's cover of "Bohemian Rhapsody" as being perfectly legal even if the Queen version was already used in a prior season.
The competitors are urged to check if an artist has been used before sending picks for a round. To do this, simply highlight the list of songs complied by me under the spoiler's tag and press the F3 button on your keyboard. A bar saying "Find" will come up on the bottom of your screen; type in the name of artist and song and you should see those words highlighted on your screen. If the bar is red, than it isn't in that set of text. Push enter to scroll through all the highlighted text that contains the words you are looking for.
Round Structure:
There are two rounds per elimination. There will be one round where the winner or winners will gain an advantage for the next round, which will be an elimination round. The first three rounds will culminate in one elimination round. After that, every two rounds will be seen as one whole, much like you see in reality tv shows. Whoever wins the first round will gain an advantage for the following elimination round. The two lowest scorers for that round will then go head to head in an elimination Sing Off (and, in some cases, there may be more than two).
Ok, to sum all that up:
After Rounds 1-3, the cumulative lowest scores will meet in an Elimination Sing-Off after the third round.
Every two rounds after that will be paired up, with the 1st round scored in order to determine who has the advantage for the 2nd round. The lowest scores for the 2nd round will determine who will meet in the Elimination Sing-Off.
Advantages received by contestants winning a round will include one of the following: an additional 5 points added to their elimination round choice (this will be unable in the Top 3 and finale rounds); the option of sending an additional song pick for a round; or the ability to effect the way a certain round is played (this will be explained as it arises). The advantages will be explained either in the first round or the elimination round, depending on how we feel the announcement will impact strategy and contestant’s emotional response (twist and turns, you know?).
The advantages will either be an additional 5 points added to the contestant's next round score, the option of sending an additional song pick for the elimination round (the option does not have to be used, however, if the contestant doesn't want to do so), or in some other way effecting the game. Note: Some of these advantages will involve strategy and may, in fact, backfire for the contestant employing them.
Unless stated otherwise, the points for both rounds are not cumulative.
Sing-Offs- At the end of each Elimination Round, the two lowest scoring contestants from that round will face off in a head to head Sing-off. Instead of points, the winner will be determined by judge's votes, a song winning if they gain the majority. Like all picks, these will be sent to the judges anonymously.
Judge's Save- The Judges have 1 Save that they can employ during any Elimination Face-Off. When I send them the Elimination Round picks, I'll end the pm with Use the Save? Yes or No? at the bottom. If they feel that the pick that they selected to have lost the round is strong enough or that the player was strong enough to keep playing or if it was just too close to call, etc. they have the option of saying that they want the save to be used.
There is only one save. Traditionally, it's used in later rounds but there is no reason that it cannot be used during any Elimination Round. Once it's used, though, it's gone. It cannot be used in the last Round or, most likely, the rounds that decide who's going to the finals (will have to talk about that with the others).
There must be a majority decision to use the save; in this case, since we have 5 judges, there must be a 3-2 vote in favor of the save. Since we have so many judges, we most likely won't ask for Guest Judges (until the finale; this will be explained later) for the rounds, barring a judge's absence.
So, after all that is said, please keep in my mind that anything can happen in this game.
