Maybe this is just an internet thing, but I just don't get why, say, if there's a viral video, people are rushing over themselves to nitpick the video to find out ways that it's fake, and then proclaiming how they can't enjoy it now because it's staged, or whatever. I didn't realize everything had to be REAL and AUTHENTIC for you to allow yourself to have fun. You must be great at movies and plays.
It's like there's some sort of misplaced macho judgement that says that letting yourself enjoy anything is a sign of weakness and instead you have to deconstruct it pseudo-scientifically to show everyone how much better you are.
Rant over, but man, this is turning me off of more and more forums and even just general websites. I hate the trend we're heading towards with more emphasis placed on comments and user interaction.

I'll cry if someone tells me the human chain thing was faked. Let me believe in humanity!
But yeah, I agree. My friends and I are generally goofy and easygoing, and I imagine it would be pretty easy for "cool people" to rip us to shreds for being stupid and easily amused. But we're happy. And most of us also have doctorates, so, like, that's just your opinion, man.

I'm starting to be able to tell when a prank call on the radio is probably 100% fake, but often I'll laugh at it anyway if it's well done enough. So long as it's entertaining, it doesn't matter.

I don't think it's so much that they don't want to have fun but that they don't want OTHERS to have fun.

But...that's the point! Viral videos are like new age urban legends. They're supposed to straddle that line between real and fake with the right amount of plausible deniability
If you know it's fake it takes away that neo-Americas Funniest home Videos feeling.

This isn't even one of those things native to the Internet. If you're in public and having a great time laughing, people tend to look at you like you're crazy. I can't count how many times me and friends get dirty looks just because we're having more fun than everyone else.

I like fun stuff, the problem I have with people is when they ONLY like fun stuff and can't appreciate things that require patience or an emotional response. I'm a very balanced dude, and when people can't enjoy something because it's "too depressing" or "too long" or whatever, it boggles my mind. Why can't you play Mario and then go play Dead Space, you know? Why can't you enjoy a burger and then eat a well-prepared meal at a nicer restaurant? Why does everything have to be bouncy and vibrant and without thought? And likewise, why does everything for some people have to be grim, super serious and intertwined with ulterior motives? People who ONLY like metal, people who ONLY like 2 minute pop songs...everyone has their own mentality that dictates who they are and what they're attracted to, but there's room for fun and room for serious in every walk of life, I'd like to think.
That's my only issue with fun stuff. That, and a lot of the fun stuff people like is mind-numbingly stupid. But I like to think those are two separate entities reflective of taste.

Can't we have fun by critiquing things?

BOOM ROASTED. EDIT: What's fun to one person can be annoying as hell to another person. I don't think this means they dislike having fun. Can't we have fun by critiquing things? Like this.

Reminds me of an argument that two of my cousins had over Christmas one year.
Cousin 1: Why do you always have to complain about everything? Can't you just be happy?
Cousin 2: Complaining makes me happy!
As for me, I love having fun.

I agree. I've always been confused with the whole "fake, therefore not funny or good" when it comes to internet videos and pictures. It just makes no sense to me why that truly matters.
Also, the people who refuse to watch the most popular viral video on the net like they are making a huge stand. Still talk to some people on the net who refused to check out Gagnam Style like they were making this huge stand against something they don't know if they would find entertaining or not. Of course, something being extremely popular has always pissed some people off for some reason.
