I've been re-watching The Shield lately since I haven't seen it since it initially aired and I've just watched the Season Five Finale. The only question I have is: Is it the most harrowing episode of a television show ever? I don't think I've seen anything fictional that was more depressing. The way Lem went and the final scene with the Vic/Kav fight, you can literally feel Vic's pain. It's just a s***ty, s***ty hour of television. I mean it's fantastically written and incredibly emotive but man it's depressing. So what are your thoughts fellow FANners?

Yes. It is definitely the most harrowing episode of a TV show ever. Shane and Lem's conversation at the end was just a tragedy on all levels.

The finale is just as devastating, if you are not there yet.

The finale is just as devastating, if you are not there yet. I'm not there yet this time round but I have seen it before, I watched them all as they aired but yeah the last ever episode is devastating too, not sure it's quite as depressing as this though. Re-watching all of the episodes has made me realise just how good a show The Shield actually was.

I think the ending of The Shield is one of the best, if not the best, endings I have ever seen in a TV show. Most shows usually crap the bed when it comes to series finales but this one? Wow. It stuck with me for a long time afterwards. I hope that when Breaking Bad ends it ends on a level like this show did.
One thing I find so frustrating is that you watch a show like this (or any other high quality show), you get to see some great writing, and then when you look at the rest of what's on TV you see that a lot of it is pure garbage.

It's probably the only thing I've ever watched (TV or film) that left me completely drained at the end of it.
The Shield really is fantastic. It takes a couple of seasons to get going, but the way it all slowly falls apart after the money train is absolutely perfect.

I completely agree, it leaves you feeling winded. And similar to you I think that type of ending would suit Breaking Bad too which, surely, only has a season and a half left in it at best. Yeah I know what you mean*. I find it difficult to watch a lot of programmes that used to not bother me after I've watched shows like The Shield or The Wire etc. I'm glad I've seen such complex and well written shows but it kind of ruins the rest of television for you because not many things can live up to that level. *the rest of this paragraph is going to make me sound incredibly snobby.

Be snobby. I am. Not every show can be great or amazing but I just wish they would sometimes try to do something different and shake things up a little. One of the reasons I liked Lost so much was because they tried something different. It wasn't perfect but it was something new (or at least felt new). Most of the time you watch TV shows and they all follow the same basic formulas over and over again.

The finale is just as devastating, if you are not there yet. Yeah, to anyone seeing the Shield for the first time (which I think is unlikely in this thread), I would seriously say partition part of your day off when you see the finale. It deeply, deeply affected me. The Shield was incredible.

You know, it's really interesting. I am in the middle of watching Season 5 of The Shield as well. This isn't a lie when I say this but I was so caught up in it that I forgot that I am almost finished with it.
I literally watched two dvd's of episodes and will start the third one tonight. Seasons 1-4 are very slow burners to what's in Season 5 and man, talk about an intense, brutal, and exciting ride that I am witnessing.

I think this season in particular proves what an amazing actor Forest Whitaker is. He comes across as extremely and legitimately manipulative, creepy, and frightening. Especially when he has a {Spoiler}breakdown of rage proportions after The Strike team outsmarted him with that sting operation.

From Season 5 to the end is some of the best TV I've ever seen. There's a TV critic in Chicago who judges every series finale against The Shield's and it has yet to be dethroned as the best ever, in his opinion.
And yeah, Forest Whitaker was just amazing. His flip out in the Captain's office ("He's just PISSING on us!") is such an intense, raw piece of acting.

I wish Forest Whitaker could main a real show(I know he had that Criminal Minds spinoff but he wasn't utilized to his fullest potential in that). He killed it on The Shield. Him and Vic going back and forth would be enough to carry a lesser show but with The Shield, they had so much elements constantly swirling around at all times. This thread makes me want to go through the series again.

Oh yeah, I remember that ending. Lem was my favorite member of the Strike Force, and after that happened, my jaw just dropped.

I think Vic is and will always be my favorite member of The Strike Team. While he is corrupt, vicious, and stubborn in his ways I think we can all agree that he isn't evil. His heart was in the right place, it's just that he became greedy and was in way too deep.
Finishing Season 5 tonight and starting Season 6 tomorrow.

I know it's bad form around here to bump an old thread but I just finished Season 7, amazing ending. As someone mentioned earlier, quite possibly the greatest finale of all time. Such a haunting but fitting end. The Shield was such a great show. Probably only behind The Wire in my favourite shows ever list.

I finished Season 7 of The Shield the other night with my dad and it was great. {Spoiler}It didn't depress me like others said it would. The only thing that kind of messed me up/caught me by surprise, is what Shane did to Mara and Jackson. Something told me he was going to kill himself too. {Spoiler}What Corrine did pissed me off too. Why in the world did she think Vic would hurt her or the kids? {Spoiler}The ending with Vic in ICE had me thinking. Does he violate his agreement and go to jail, much like what Lem was going to do, or does he full on become a rogue ICE agent trying to find his family?
