Yes, I know this is a bit hypocritical considering I've posted in them (and that was mostly due to me moderating them), but I just realized it's possibly my absolute least favorite thread type anywhere. Not only do they get unnecessarily heated 75% of the time, but the vast majority of opinions expressed aren't even all that unpopular. It just feels like we're patting ourselves on the back for weak attempts at being controversial. I'm not trying to enforce or dictate anything, but that's how I feel about them. If I never saw another one again it would be far too soon. A bit hypocritical? Aren't all your threads basically unpopular opinion ones?

Edit: Starshine, you read my mind. That's why I'm invoking Poe's Law on this thread.

Meh, they are better than people who blatantly post to get attention.

They're useful for knowing which user you can skip posts by in future I wish I could "like" this post.

I think they're the worst types of threads on the board, and I wouldn't mind seeing them banned. I love this place and its posters, but those threads never really serve their purpose and just promote vanity posts and conflict.
Here's the usual breakdown:
25% - Actual unpopular opinions.
25% - Inaccurate, un-researched snap judgments under the false assumption of "well, that's just my opinion and I have the right to it."
25% - Popular opinions thrown out there either to get a bunch of thread-love or unknowingly proving the poster doesn't really participate in a lot of discussions regarding what they're talking about.
25% - Trolling/trying to look cool with a radically different opinion on something.
If we can't have a million Bo Dallas/Strong Gay/Don't Get Too Attached threads (which were eliminated for no good reason when they brought nothing but joy and smiles to the board), the Unpopular Opinions threads should be removed too.

Yeah, we need more threads about people's ass hair and their latest romantic failures instead. The contents of my anus are of critical importance.

Much like other thread types that polarize people, the unpopular opinion threads aren't getting banned. We only start locking them if they're like 5 or 6 clogging up the front page, and even then it's for a brief period of time to give the concept a rest (as with a running gag being abused).
I just personally don't care for them, tis all.

You say joy and smiles, I say people trying to leech off someone else's joke to get attention (my opinion only...it's popularity may vary) and failing miserably for the most part.

Nah b, they were funny and universally loved and accepted. Unpopular opinions are people leeching off conflicting with others to get attention. What's a bigger cry for attention than "LOOK HOW DIFFERENT I AM, YOU GUYS?!" No idea how a Bo Dallas meme is feeding that attention whoring any worse.

This way: -Guy starts thread..gets popular. -Other posters think "hey, he's got a popular thread, I'll make one just like it and people will like it too! -Other posters make similar threads in rapid succession, leading to yet another premature meme death. -Section gets flooded with these unfunny threads, to the point where we have to lock them so that the section isn't known as the unfunny joke area. You can say they were loved all you want, C (or D..maybe E) but it doesn't make it so.

I think they're the worst types of threads on the board, and I wouldn't mind seeing them banned. Okay, seriously now? Banning certain types of topics that really aren't offensive to anyone because some people don't like them and ignoring them is apparently too much of a hassle? I mean it's not even like the titles are annoying in themselves so just disregard them and start your own thread with blackjack and hookers.

Or the joke naturally dies out in like two days only to pop up occassionally when the right time calls for it and it becomes a running joke, like the Will ______ Ruin the Tensai Gimmick. I also don't see how the unpopular opinions threads are any better.
