I am watching some episodes of Raw from the Attitude era, I noticed while yes the main event top feuds had clear faces and heels, that the mid card feuds a lot of them didn't have the traditional face vs heel formula.
It was two sides are feuding and the fans can cheer for either side they want. Take for example, the Brood vs the Hardeys, the roles of face and heel were not clearly defined. Other guys like Val Venis, Mark Henry, it was not defined what side they were on. Val Venis who used women and treated them like dirt should logically be a hated heel, the more he did that, the more fans loved it. Hardcore Holly and whoever he was feuding with, who is the face, who the heel, it was a werid time.
It was a weird time with the mid cards, while at the top of the card, it is clear who the good guys and who the bad guys are.

Who was supposed to be the face in Val Venis vs Dustin Runnels?

That is the one thing about Vince Russo that I like. If you were on the roster, he was going to find something for you to do.

I agree it was kind of cool to have it that way. They had many more options for feuds without people being clearly on one "side" or the other. Val Venis who used women and treated them like dirt should logically be a hated heel, the more he did that, the more fans loved it. Same as with the Godfather, though I'm sure the "ho's" had even more to do with that than I originally gave credit for.

Who was supposed to be the face in Val Venis vs Dustin Runnels? I think it was actually a double switch, with Dustin turning face upon the return of Goldust and Val turning heel when he made the movie with Terri.

It was one of the key points made by Vinny Mac in his attitude promo, that the day of good guys vs bad guys were gone.

But then Val turned face immediately afterwards when it was revealed that Terri was pregnant and Val had a vasectomy, I think.

I feel like WWE is trying to dip their toes back into this arena but just don't have the character development to do it.

And the bit before which is even more on the nose:
" We also think that you're tired of the same old simplistic theory of "Good Guys VS Bad Guys"."

I know he worked as a face the rest of '98, but he was a heel in early 1999.

I think that was right after his feud with Jeff Jarrett ended at the end of 1998.

Well, I've been reliving this stuff on Classics on Demand, and I can't tell you how Goldust is supposed to be, and it's right before Rumble 1999. The crowds are still popping for him heavily despite the Snow feud, and Snow is definitely a babyface. Was he a heel when he was facing Bluedust/Blue Meanie?
