It's hard not to notice when watching WWF programming from 1997-1999 or so the abundance of signs you see in the crowd. The show would open with pyro, then the cameras would pan or crane around the arena as hundreds of people tried to show off their "_______ is my dad" or "Sable 4:69" signs.
Nowadays, it seems like only a handful of people, in comparison to the Attitude Era years, bring signs to television tapings. Though there has been a notable increase of 'giant head' signs in recent years. Curious.
Anyway, why do you think the significant, popular, mass use of signs has fallen away as something fans would bring to participate in the show besides cheering or booing compared to today?

Because it's tough to hold a sign in one hand and a phone in the other.

When did people start bringing signs to wrestling events?

Not the only answer but it sure doesn't help that they take up any sign that seems offensive or if it "hurts their backdrop" on tv. Yea I'm still angry that they took up all my 'YES' signs at Raw 1000. I had over 100 and just started passing them out to my section and a security guy came around and took them all up before the show started

There was a sign that seemed to pop up at every show in 2002-03: "PORK"
Two shows that come to mind are SummerSlam 2002 (you could see it during the entrances) and SmackDown in 2003, where Undertaker is laughing at Vince and informs him that they will be fighting at Survivor Series 2003.

Basically, the sign security came into effect and people stopped bringing signs, or at least generally witty ones or oddly offensive one. The best one in recent memory I will say was Kane and Daniel Bryan as Angry Birds, which is a bit nerdy, but I enjoyed it.

I also think the novelty of being seen on TV has worn off considerable since the 90's. Back in the day, I remember if anyone in the family went to any kind of sporting event or televised event, it was a big deal to look for yourself/your family member on television. That was exciting. Nowadays cameras are everywhere. There's a million TV channels and things like YouTube. Nobody cares if you're seen in a crowd on TV anymore. Times have changed.

Another fair point is these days a lot of people are too busy posting about what's happening on their phone to really get into it.

Basically, the sign security came into effect and people stopped bringing signs, or at least generally witty ones or oddly offensive one. Pretty much this. It's disgusts me to be honest. You have paying fans who cared enough about your product to put the time to make and draw up a sign but because it's not jiving with whatever wrestler your shoving down the fans throats they deem it "not good for TV" and taken away. I'm not taking about offensive signs I'm talking about harmless signs they take away for stupid reasons.

Shameus! My theory is Kevin Dunn doesn't like the abundance of signs so yeah sign police to the rescue! Has there even been a sign where Sheamus name was spelled correctly? Also I miss the Batista Bomb signs They do the Batista Bomb sign in Blue Jays games though
