I never liked his work as the franchise
The guy was an average worker with decent public speaking skills
Listened to one of his shoots and he does not come across as a douche bag despite other douche bags claiming he is

I was a huge Douglas fan when he was in ECW. That being said, after his multitude of comebacks and numerous ECW reunions (outside of the original run of Hardcore Reunion shows), he went from being "The Franchise" to "that guy who sits at the local sports bar and recounts his days of high school football glory" I think most people feel he did get a fair shake over all, but because no one strapped a rocket to his ass and declared him THE GUY he ends up thinking he was held down. To be perfectly honest if he'd looked at the WWF at the time he went to WCW he probably could have gotten a job there and gotten a decent push but because of past history he went to the company that had two of his former adversaries in top spots vs the company that had two of them as upper midcarders You pretty much nailed it; if he's not getting a push in the WWF or WCW, it's because he was being held down and because of politics. He'd go to the newsletters or do a shoot video bitching and moaning about it instead of thinking "maybe if I step up my game, they might give me a shot". I liked the guy, his ECW run is some of the best heel work you'd ever see from anybody. He wasn't afraid to be the hated heel at a time when more and more people wanted to be the "cool heel". He was a jerk and he let you know it. Not just insulting guys and fleshing out an angle or storyline on the mic. I mean grabbing Gary Wolfe's protective halo (when he had the neck injury storyline) and throwing him to the mat. (You want to see heat that would almost get you killed? Find that clip; I believe it was around October 1996. You had fans trying to jump the barricade to get at him.) I love Shane Douglas' promos about breaking Gary Wolfe's neck. One of my favorites is Shane doing laps in the pool of the place Wolfe was supposedly going to rehab his neck while Francine asked the therapist if Gary's halo weighs him down in the pool. Here's the video of Shane grabbing Gary by the halo. For some reason it's dubbed in (I believe) Japanese. Also, I love how twice after the melee calms down Gertner twice tries to announce Douglas as the winner and gets attacked twice for his troubles. (There's an audible f-bomb or two, so language warning) www.youtube.com/watch?v=lr5iMyy9jlU

I liked Shane, but I also think he made way too many enemies publicly when he did not have the other factors there to take care of him. I'm sure Warrior had beef with several people on the roster (Off the top of my head, I'll go with Andre the Giant for a period, Rick Rude, and Hulk Hogan -- do correct me if I'm wrong), but Warrior had an absolutely unf***withable character because of how exciting and vibrant it was and how perfect he was for the part. He could afford to be a dickhead because of his standing. Douglas couldn't. He didn't get along with Ric Flair or the Kliq -- two key entities running wrestling when he was at his peak physically and name-value-wise -- and he didn't have the sense to push that aside. Shane wasn't in a position of power where could say what he wanted or piss off the top guys and still remain a must-hire. What were his thoughts on Hulk Hogan? I bet Shane thought Hulk was a dickhead, too. Ya, I think pretty much that. He had very good charisma, was an OK wrestler, and had the "cool" factor from ECW that should have made him a factor during the attitude era with the big 2. But he had the wrong enemies. He just failed at the social game, which is something you just can't do in most businesses.

He was excellent in ECW, but that was because he was in the right place at the right time. He was a perfect fit to be the a-hole heel in ECW. He wouldnt have been able to get away with his style anywhere but there. Maybe a short stint in WWF aropund 98-01 but he burned his bridges there.
