My friend never could hate this movie. I can see why Raul Julia is great in this. For some reason I always did love when he said for me it was Tuesday

This was just talked about on the How Did This Get Made Podcast.
First off - the lack of "street fighting" confused most SF fans and non-fans alike.
Secondly - it was one of those movies where they took a very simple premise and made it a thousands times more complicated in an attempt to make it much more digestible for non-gamers.
Plot of game: A dictator/crime boss holds a tournament to get revenge on enemies and recruit new talent. Some join to rise in the ranks of the criminal underworld and some do it to get revenge against Bison.
Plot of Movie: No tournament and it's basically a hodgepodge of good guys (3 seperate groups (Guile's Army, Ken & Ryu, & Asian Reporter Chun-Li) vs Bison's army (and a scientist who mutates Carlos into Blanka) as the UA invades the country of Shadowloo in an attempt to retrieve UA workers from being held hostage.
How that's easier for audiences to understand - I'll never know. Should've just made BloodSport again with SF characters.

Never watch this movie on blu-ray.
On VHS/DVD, I used to love this film as a silly over-produced action romp with the homie Jean Claude.
But watching it in HD, you really see how close Raul Julia is to death and it just absolutely kills the fun for me.

I freaking love that movie... frankly, I'd place it in a top 100 favorite movies of mine, if I ever make one. Sometimes I want a good plot, and sometimes I want goofy fun.

I was shocked to learn of the after-credits scene over a decade after release.

I often compare Raul Julia in this to Frank Langella as Skeletor. In both cases you could see them using their very rich theater background to take a rather two-dimensional character and make it much more unique and entertaining. I just wish Julia had not died after making this-he looked so ghostly throughout the whole thing.

It feels kinda like they took a discarded GI Joe movie script, changed character names and shoe-horned in a references to the game. And, as mentioned on HDTGM, the truly good things in life are when white people get married, when black people get married, and dolphins.

I just watched this yesterday. I can see why people don't like it but it's so cheesy and tongue-in-cheek that it's hard not to.
I'm still shocked that somehow The Legend of Chun-Li was worse.

It has two members, myself and my best friend. We used to have about 8 members.

"cheesy and tongue-in-cheek" is the reason why this version was so different from the legend of chun li. Once you get past that the 94 version is a horrendous betrayal of the SF story, it comes off as a laugh fest you can quote with your buddies. Legend of chun li is just a terrible movie, no matter who the characters are supposed to be based on.

Love this film for being over the top and stupid. It has barely anything to do with the actual game sries but as others have said it is very quotable and laughably bad. Raul Julia is clearly the best thing in the film although I think they got Vega down pretty well.
Also yeah there is a post credits scene which is fun. (In a Masters of the Universe/Flash Gordon style.)

As a kid I loved this movie despite being well aware even then how much of a clear bastardization it was. Unlike Legend of Chun-Li, everyone involved seems to know it sucks and has fun with it.
The official game, though....dear god.
