Given how Vince likes to leech on popular trends, especially in pro sports, do you think we might see a gay character in the near future?
Jason Collins has, if nothing else, drawn a LOT of attention since coming out as an active NBA player. I wouldn't be surprised if the E went with an openly gay character. Not a flamboyant stereotype either, but just a regular wrestler who just happens to be gay. Billy and Chuck do not count in my opinion, as they were just faking for whatever reason they had.

They go for the swerve and instead have a gay wrestler come out as a basketball player.

Maybe 15 years from now when Vince reads about his coming out then something will happen.

It wouldn't work. WWE wouldn't gain anything.

NOT THIS AGAIN LOL....Once a week seriously. Really. I'm hoping the WWE makes it happen, just so these threads don't keep popping up. It worked with Sid returning.

No. Nothing good could come from WWE trying to have a gay character.
He would be either, stereotypical and offensive or crowd reactions in some parts of the country would be really negative, with "faggot" chants and things like that.

Another serious gay wrestler thread?

It wouldn't work. WWE wouldn't gain anything. And because it would come off the heels of the Collins' story (and knowing WWE is choreographed), it would be lame in comparison. And it would be lame in general, really. I honestly can't think of how this would draw.

This again?
As mentioned on this board previously, there's no way you can have a gay character where being gay isn't a big part of the gimmick.
Besides, I'm pretty sure there would still be a significant portion of the crowds who would be completely unreceptive towards it, which would lead to disastrous consequences should it happen at a live show.

or crowd reactions in some parts of the country would be really negative, with "faggot" chants and things like that. I heard a lot of cynicism from people predicting negative reactions to Jason Collins, but I just don't see it, in the NBA or in wrestling. I also think it's not a good reason not to push the envelope, and to just hide from it. Imagine an old-timey promoter back in the day saying, "I can't push a black guy as a top babyface, the fans will chant racial slurs!" Whether the guy was right or not, society evolved when people get over that kind of fear. Whether or not this fear of America's rejection of homosexuality is warranted or not, I'm kind of glad that that boogeyman will be dead soon when Collins' world doesn't implode over this and NBA fans don't chant gay slurs at him. I'm pretty sure the fears would be equally unfounded in wrestling. On the other hand, from a creative standpoint, ya, I don't see the point. Unless they bring in a guy that was already out and known to wrestling fans. If that happened, I could see them choosing not to hide from the guy's sexuality, and in fact, they'd probably try to exploit it for positive attention.

They shouldn't try. If someone in WWE happens to be gay and feels compelled to publicly disclose it, I have faith that WWE wouldn't exploit it for storyline purposes, though this is WWE who often fail to take the high road.

Maybe they can do a GLAAD video with Pat Patterson. He's a WWE Legend/Patriarch who has nothing to lose at this point.

Imagine an old-timey promoter back in the day saying, "I can't push a black guy as a top babyface, the fans will chant racial slurs!" They pushed black guys back in the day, particularly in the south, because there were A LOT of black wrestling fans. They were partially catering to an established and hungry market. There is no gay market anywhere on the same grandiose and identifiable scale. That said, I wouldn't trust wrestling fans to not expose themselves as being intolerant idiots. And I wouldn't trust WWE to present a character as anything other than a caricature.

Only if he's a serious gay character who the shareholders don't like who also has two loud different apartment neighbors that either have sex loudly or plays Mario loudly. Am I doing this right?
