The right answer is Mario, but I'm voting for LoZ just so it's not totally one sided.

Well really the correct answer here is nostalgia. But seriously this is a tough one for me between Pokemon and Zelda. And it really is only between those two. Platformers can be fun games, but there isn't any real meat to them beyond collecting a lot of stuff. If this was a tournament about the most FUN game franchise, Mario easily, but it isn't most fun, it is the greatest, and that, to me, takes more than just being fun. Has to have depth, has to have a story, and also it has to have the consistency of quality. Sonic and Mario are out as Sonic has bad inconsistent quality and Mario lacks the depth and story. Pokemon has a story and some surprising depth, and is my favorite game franchise period, but it is also lacking in consistency of quality, once you take the spin-offs into consideration. Thus the only logical choice for me is Zelda, the only video game franchise to not have a single bad game in its officially recognized history. Not to say every game was good, though, just at its worst Zelda games are either merely "decent" or "good". But that alone should be why Zelda should win, it is a series so consistent in its quality that its worst games are of a quality many games can only wish they had.

Mario won? Meh.
Like I said if it was a tourney of the most fun series, yeah, that would've been my vote, too. But a game can be fun without being "great" and vice versa.
Mario games are fun, but not really what I'd call "great". Outside of being insanely fun, they are pretty shallow games.

I think one thing that makes Mario so great and one of the best Franchises is because everybody knows Mario I mean correct me if I'm wrong but I think the highest grossing game of all time was Super Mario Bros. 3, and really I think a big factor in what makes a game the best Video Game Franchise is how much money that game made cause when you get down to it that is the most important thing to the developers sure they want the game to be fun but more than that they want the game to make a lot of money and be very popular and Mario did just that. If I could be in charge of any Video Game Franchise (from beginning to end) I'd be an idiot not to pick Mario, sure other games are great and made a lot of money but no other game series is as popular as Super Mario hell even non gamers know who Mario is, in terms of Wrestling its like Hulk Hogan everybody knows who Hulk Hogan is (especially in the 80s) even non Wrestling fans. That's just my take on it. Mario wins the Tournament here is a classic video for Mario

If you seriously think how much money a series makes is indicative of its quality, I honestly don't know what else to say. There are several high quality series and games that barely sell, and there are some inconsistent or down right bad games that sell like hot cakes. The popularity of/amount of money made by a game franchise just shows how niche or not niche it is, that's it. Quality means jack.

I never said Popularity = Quality This was a nothing more than a glorified popularity contest. I've played a lot of games that have great quality but they don't have a lot of popularity, not that they aren't great games they are just not as popular as a lot of these other games like Zelda, Mario, Pokemon. The greatest Video Game Franchise has to be about Popularity the more popular it is the more people play it and the more people that play it make it popular. If it was about Quality I could think of hundreds of games that beat Mario.

Saying that it does means that you are saying that popularity equals quality. I honestly cannot see how "greatest" means most popular. If that is the case, why the bloody hell did this tournament have to occur? Of course Mario is going to win a freaking popularity contest! Kinda feel like I've wasted my time with this thing now, to be honest. Especially since I spent the entire thing voting for the ones I thought were of better quality, when in fact I apparently should've been voting for the one I liked more/thought was more popular. Silly me for voting for quality in a tournament called the "Greatest Video Game Franchise Tourney".

Maybe your right I don't know I just think if a game wins greatest franchise it has to be the one that is the most popular.
I think the majority of people that voted for Mario in this probably never even played those other games before and I'll be honest I've never played a Pokemon game in my life so I couldn't vote for it.
More people played Mario and had fond memories of the Mario Series which is more than just platform games you got to count the sports games, RPGs, and hundreds of other Mario games.
There isn't many games I rank above Mario RPG quality wise or popularity wises my opinion one of the greatest games of all time.
I would of voted Zelda as my second pick to me (Based on the final four in this contest) no Zelda game will ever beat Link to the Past in my opinion.
Honestly it would of been better to see another game win this besides Mario but I knew seeing the finals and based on how popular Mario is it was going to win hands down.

Honestly it would of been better to see another game win this besides Mario but I knew seeing the finals and based on how popular Mario is it was going to win hands down. Fair enough, I suppose. Though the thing is the Mario presented was Super Mario Bros., not the Mario franchise as a whole(which is why I didn't vote for it). The Mario franchise, imo, is all of the various franchises with Mario in it. Super Mario Bros., to me, just means the platformers. The Mario Kart, Mario Party, Mario & Luigi, Paper Mario, and Mario vs. Donkey Kong franchises are all big enough to stand alone, and all could've honestly(and most of them probably should've) been nominated on their own. I know, I know, getting into semantics a bit, but still I, at least personally, separate Super Mario Bros. from all of the other Mario franchises. Primarily because aside from having the same characters, the various franchises in the Mario series don't play a damn thing like each other. Mario Kart is a racing series, Mario Party is a board game series, Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario are both RPG series, but don't really play the same, and Mario vs. Donkey Kong is a puzzle series. And that's not even touching the Mario Sports games, which are all technically their own individual franchises as well. Basically, to put it plain and simply, Mario has a franchise in nearly every major genre in gaming, short of shooter. It is the same reason why I nominated Persona separate from Shin Megami Tensei, they are part of the same parent franchise, but play completely differently.
