Contract players are kept on for 6 years. It started with 5 years when Eddie Murphy left but now it's 6.

Hader AND likely Suds leaving this year? Ouch. Yup, it's indeed time for others to step up. I think Taran Killam has the potential to be BIG.

Well, in the past, there would be a huge cast-dumping and a whole new cast would come in. Once when Lorne and the originals left, then again when Lorne came back (and most of that cast didn't make it past the season). Then in 94-96 there was another one. For whatever reason, they don't feel the need to drop everybody and start fresh anymore. Because those casts and seasons and their ratings were absolute despicable s***. Even though I don't watch it anymore, I haven't heard tales of horror like I have of those other seasons... I don't mean to say that the show hasn't had struggles like you mentioned. I shouldn't have said "for whatever reason" because I understand it's risky to throw out a cast that have proven themselves with the audience and with a whole new cast there's doubts and unfamiliarity. But I find it interesting when the show struggles for a bit with finding a new voice and then ultimately the ship rights itself. That's more interesting to me than Fred Armisen hanging around forever or Kenan doing another "What's Up With That" sketch when those have run their course already. Though I'll admit what I find interesting isn't necessarily what's good for business, and there have still been solid performers coming onto the show in recent years without a complete overhaul.

I like SNL. It's good for a few laughs even on a bad show. But when they have a good one, it's awesome. But Hader will be missed big time. Stefon is my favorite SNL character ever.

Bummer, but they'll replace him. Its just the circle of life with SNL. Theres always someone new. I will miss Stefon though.

Looks like Armisen is leaving too. Big rebuilding year coming up. If that's true, Kenan would be pretty much the only guy left with more than five years on the show. This could be either really good or really bad. Either way, I'm really intrigued.
