Taped this yesterday and just got done watching it, so I thought I'd post a thread on here to see if anybody else has seen it.
I'm something of a Liberace fan, mainly because of his attention to flash. I'm not a big piano fan, but my God do I admire some of the costumes the dude wore. Some are just ridiculous, but I love rhinestones so I'm envious of some of the stuff he had.
Anyway, I didn't think the film was perfect, but I thought it was a great film, regardless. Michael Douglas did a great job as Liberace, to the point where I'm not sure if anybody else could've done as good. I'm not a huge fan of Douglas, but he played the role perfect. Matt Damon was also very good in his role, and played a very believable "rags to riches" type story within the movie.
I'm still somewhat surprised that Douglas and Damon starred in this because, while HBO is a big channel, I guess I don't think of them as "made for TV movie" kind of guys. Still, though, I thought the film was very well done and Douglas was outstanding in his role.
Has anybody else here seen it? If so, what did you think?

Recent HBO films are awful. Of the last few of their movies I've seen. The Girl, Spector, and Candelabra, all have been unbelivably dull and plodding. I'm not saying they need to make Fast and Furious 7, but would it kill them to try a comedy? This is the same company that does Game of Thrones and True Blood, they have access to great writers and directors. I don't get why their film division is just so... dull.

I can't believe the same movie industry that has supported and endorsed much about the gay culture in America for the last few decades actually had the balls to say to Steven Soderbergh "What? A story about a real life gay man and his gay lover? No, we can't finance that. It's too gay."
(Seriously, that is what happened and why this was on HBO, the only people who'd front the $5mil necessary to make it.)
All the talk about this movie I've seen is that (a) it was very good and (b) Michael Douglas needs to win everything for his performance. Sad on them to think anyone legitimate is still thinking (c) ewww gays.

All the talk about this movie I've seen is that (a) it was very good and (b) Michael Douglas needs to win everything for his performance. Sad on them to think anyone legitimate is still thinking (c) ewww gays. Yeah, I was pretty surprised to see that that was the reason it didn't make theaters. I mean, I can get people saying the film is "gay". It centers around a gay relationship - so, by definition, it is. I guess. However, what exactly is "too gay"? Nothing explicit is shown other than Douglas grabbing Damon's crotch once, which is hardly explicit, so I'm confused as to where the "too gay" thing comes from. Is it the fact that we see them kissing and we see Damon's ass a few times? The former is a normal human act and the latter has been used in movies a thousand times over, be it for serious or comedic purposes. Maybe if it was a nasty, super explicit borderline porno type movie, but it's not. It's a wonderfully done story based around a rocky relationship including one of the biggest names entertainment has ever known. There's some rather explicit dialogue, but it's not like it's the only movie to feature such language. Regardless I'm just glad somebody came through with the money as the end result was fantastic. Douglas definitely deserves to win some awards for his performance, as it was borderline perfect, in my opinion.

oh yeah and Rob Lowe is f***ing amazing, every time hes on screen he literally steals the show, his face is so well done and the way he holds it to be so contorted and expressionless is really f***ing scary

I enjoyed it.
Still, the whole idea that he got his young gay lover to...
well, this could be a spoiler though it's pretty much public record I guess, so fair warning.
That he got his young gay lover to get plastic surgery to look like him is just all sorts of bizarre. He wanted to have sex with a young him? Wow.

At the risk of pissing off people, I'm shocked that Ben Affleck didn't have a part in this movie. Other than that, from what I've read, Damon and Douglas deserve some kind of award for their willingness to honor the memory of Liberace using this film. In my opinion, that takes balls...big balls.
