Since the latest Observer said the following
What better idea to make Cena a "legend" than to have the longest title reign in 25 years?
Imagine all the odds Cena could overcome in following 12+ months as Champ. The possibilities are endless.

Then we'll get lots of posts about how Cena's reign has gone on this long solely as a way to bury CM Punk.

Bruno Sammartino 4040 Hulk Hogan 2185 Bob Backlund 2138 John Cena 1116+
1069 to pass Hogan. A little under 3 years. Give Ryback or someone the WHC, and let Cena get his 3 year reign, pass Hogan and ride into the sunset. I wonder what it would be like, retaining for 30+ PPVs straight.

Babyfaces as neverending champions always bores me. It gets so stale that you begin to cheer for anyone to knock them off, which is not an opinion you want the audience to have about your good guys. That's why JBL worked so great, and why the second half of Punk's reign was better than the first. They're the bad guy, people are supposed to be rooting for someone to take their championship.
A good guy who fends off every challenge at every turn is just incredibly boring. Yes, there are people who like that kind of storytelling, but there are more who will get bored. Not necessarily go on the internet and start talking about "stale booking", but just ordinary people who may stop tuning in every week when they find something that interests them more. That's why unstoppable good guys are dangerous. People will stick around to see the bad guy finally get theirs. Not many people get enjoyment out of waiting for the good guy to finally lose.

Unless it's a "Reign of Terror" where every babyface challenger has an aura of pointlessness and inevitability against the unstoppable monstrous god heel champion that always finds away. Those can be as painful as an eternal babyface champion.

I think a lot of you are underestimating WWE's hold on the minds of their audience at-large, and fans unwillingness to change.
John Cena getting a 3-year reign? It's crazy, but it's not impossible. They are unwilling to flinch on him now. Everyone, babyfaces, heels, rookies, divas, they all fall behind in favor of what can be done to make John Cena look as strong as possible...and than even stronger the next week. The kids that cheer for him now would only be a couple of years older, and their little brothers and sisters will still love him.
They can rotate Orton, Ryback, Punk in and out while throwing in the occasional fresh face like Wade Barrett and Damien Sandow in. Plus, there's always NXT for new guys to bring up. Kassius Ohno? Turn him heel. Luke Harper? Already on his way. Not to mention, the occasional feud with another face so they can remind us all about how "controversial" John Cena is, but the results stay the same.
This is the hell we live in, guys. And it is inescapable.

For me it all depends on the booking. Cena can deliver in the ring, occasionally on the mic, it's just his booking that has been horrible, though if he was to get a 435+ day reign, I doubt they'd do anything outside the crap they do now.

If this happened, many fans are gonna stop watching and I'm not even kidding. Cena has been on top and unstoppable for EIGHT years already which means it'll be a decade of the same old crap.

He's already a goddamn legend. He was already a legend by Wrestlemania 22. This. Hell, he doesn't need to be champion now. The man's synonymous with the WWE, and he's had a hell of a decade in the company. There's no "if" regarding his Hall of Fame status, just when and who's gonna induct him. There's literally no good reason to make him a year-long champion.
