(8) WWE Championship Tables Match John Cena (c) def. Ryback
Before the event I got to meet Cody Rhodes at the mall as he was doing an autograph signing for free brought to us in part by the National Guard. When I got to the line there was only 4 people ahead of me. He said that the line was out the door only an hour before. He was a great guy to talk to and very humble. He noticed my wife's new tattoo and told us that Fandango just got a new tattoo on his leg of Johnny Cash and hasn't taken care of it all. He said "Fandango just thinks that wearing his tights will keep it from ruin, but he refuses to put any lubricant on it" and "All the guys in the back keep telling him he is going to screw it up". Then he told us another story about how when he would wrestle Rey Mysterio they would go out of their way to protect his new tattoos in the ring and would always cover them before the match and after..
My wife got us floor seats, The Shield side. I was super excited and had no clue what to expect. During the event I really had no clue what was going to happen because they obviously changed up the card some from previous recent house shows. My wife has never been to an event ever, so it was an experience for her as well. I have been to PPVs, House, and Tapings in the brand split, and attitude eras.
The first thing that I noticed was the family atmosphere. There were so many kids it was insane. All wearing John Cena gear, it reminded me of my obsession with Hogan in the late 80's and early 90's. The kids would boo the heels, and cheer the good guys. Parents would go out of their way to make sure the kids could see. A lot of times a dad would put the kid on his shoulders making it impossible for us to see. Or you would have a kid stand on his seat holding up his sign. It was awesome and sucked all at the same time. It was fun to see the passion in these kids eyes, but being unable to see the action in the ring was horrible especially for my wife who is 4'11. The event staff tried to get people to sit down, but by the the main event they just gave up. When Cena came out kids rushed the front row of the floor, to cheer, and take pictures. It reminded me of that rush to the front of the stage during a music festival when your favorite band is about to come on. The kids rushed to the front row and stayed their the whole match..
I yelled "Cena Sucks" at the appropriate time, and one 7 year old next to me told me to "Suck It!" and noticed my Punk shirt and explained he was a Rock fan. I said "Me Too", to squash this awkward interaction with the young fan.
The matches were better than I thought they would be, a lot of crowd interactions from the wrestlers.. Tensai (who I saw a long time ago as Prince Alber) looks like an absolute beast live, I didn't realize that Tensai's nickname was "Sweet T", the crowd chanted this through out the opening match( I imagine the commentators say it during his matches on TV and I never catch it). Ryback was huge, and hugely over as well.
Daniel Bryan was the star of the night in my eyes, he went out of his way to put on a top notch match, him and Kane even pulled off a double choke slam, it looked like the Hurricane Helms chokeslam. The Shield was amazing live. I have followed Ambrose, and Rollin's careers so it was great to finally see them in person.
It was great to see Bray Wyatt twice in one night. He came out and beat up Justin Gabriel at the end of the match, and then came out later and acted as manager. I felt like the only person on the floor who was excited about seeing him. He and the family put on a great show live, with the music, sheep's mask, and the promo it was so creepy, but I loved every minute of it. It gave me goose bumps in that Undertaker entrance type of way.
Vicki came out for the divas match, and she sounded so much like Roseanne it was awesome. I laughed my ass off at the hate that spewed from Mobile, AL.
They did a Paul Bearer tribute with his son or brother at ringside.
The crowd as expected went insane for Cena, and he put on a great show. The table match was pretty much the same one we saw at PayBack. You could tell he put everything in that match and enjoyed the love from the crowd. You can see it in Cena's face that he loves his job, and will never quit as long as he can almost like the Terminator's undying love and protection for John Connor..
All in all, the family atmosphere has shaped this product so much, it was a change from my last times at WWE events. I think that my last event featured Ric Flair and Jeff Hardy, so this was a welcoming change. I don't think I would get floor seats again unless it was front row. I was disappointed I couldn't see Ziggler, Punk, Curtis Axel, Mark Henry, Antonio Cesaro, and Roddy Piper (although I know Piper wouldn't be there in a million years, he is my personal favorite).. I was even more surprised that Alex Riley is still with the company and walked away a bigger RyBack fan.
Here's two pictures from the day.. I couldn't get anymore because I use a potato as a phone and I didn't want to be that guy who watches the whole show through his camera lens.
