Are a lot of them still around? I talked to Boris Zhukov a few times about 7 years ago and remember he was still doing his heel Russian gimmick. However, I can't remember the last time I saw one in person.

Vladimir Kozlov was one for, like, a week or two on ECW, where he was coming out with the hammer and sickle on his titantron. It never went anywhere.

Alex "Peter Orlov" Koslov. He was doing the Russian gimmick in PWG in 2006. The fur hat, the dance, etc. He returned for a match there in 2012

Modern Russia maybe isn't as scary as the Soviet Union but I think the stereotypical evil Russian could still be a great character. Still a lot to draw from there.

I went to an NAW show last year and they had an un-ironic Soviet gimmick with mask and flag. It was awesome.

I blame Rocky Balboa for ending the Cold War. If I can change, and you can change, Everybody can change!

The old Russian Commie is used nowadays as an ironic gimmick. Unless it's in certain parts of the US where some folks still think the Cold War going on.

The Russians still think they're fighting the Cold War, so there's always room for somebody to instantly hate if they thought outside the box and not resort to the old "USSR Hammer & Sickle" motif from the '80s.
Koslov would have worked.

It could still work now. Someone can talk about how awesome Putin is, and how he deserves the Super Bowl ring he has.

The ref goes to pat him down but the Russian heel just says "I don't have any weapons on me. I've sold them all to my opponent's enemies."

Why hasn't there been any American Communist heels? There is a Communist Party in America and I think the idea of Soviet sympathisers would draw a lot of heel heat, and it's different to have a Soviet sympathising heel who's character is not from the Soviet Union.

There's still a very cold and sinister edge to some Russians that I think could make an interesting wrestling character. Of course, Hassan was the same kind of interesting character (in that it wasn't the basic blunt stereotypical character) and that went stereotypical pretty quick.

I can't quite remember the name, but I think Barry Darsow played a character like that in the NWA. Was it like Krusher Khrushchev or something?

Alex Koslov in New Japan comes pretty close, but the Japanese audience is respectful and quiet during his rendition of the Soviet National Anthem: youtu.be/HxNeW91MQjc?t=36s

When I was in Japan, I was hoping Kozlov was going to sing the Russian National Anthem, and was so disappointed. I also love Kendrick losing it in the video.
