I think most people either love or hate Jody Highroller and nothing in between, but there is always a debate on whether or not he's playing a character. Personally, I like the guy. Obviously, he's not the best MC alive, but he's entertaining as all hell and I wouldn't really care if he were just a gimmick, but then I saw some pictures of him at his sister's wedding from a few years ago, which lead me to believe that this is not an act. I doubt somebody would dare to or be allowed to further a gimmick at a sibling's wedding, so I'm thinking his persona is legit. What's your opinion? Does anybody know for sure one way or the other?

Never heard of him outside of an appearance on a podcast.
Guy sounds like what happens when you take too much drugs.

Haha, I spoke to him literally just yesterday. Dude seems legit to me. Playing up his persona for shits and giggles, yes, but this is what he truly reps. I love Riff Raff.

I've never known what to think about people who can get away with living a gimmick 24/7 and actually make decent money out of it...

He gave me this great, rambly quote about why he raps instead of doing other things:
It's in my blood. It's in my DNA, music-wise, you know what I mean? Writing and music and movies and entertainment and money and luxury and hotels and fashion and women and girls and all these expensive cars — it's all in my blood. I mean, really, music is just a way to say what you got on your mind. [If] people want to say whether it makes sense to them or not, I couldn't care less. I use music as venting. I'm venting. I'm saying what's on my mind. Let's say there's Steven Spielberg and he makes a movie, a sci-fi movie. Alfred Hitchcock or Stephen King makes a crazy movie. They might be getting off whatever's in their mind. With me, the things I'm saying, it doesn't matter if it makes sense to somebody. You can't tell an iPhone 5 to explain how a iPhone 5 is better than a Motorola Razr. You can't expect a Motorola Razr to understand an iPhone 5, you see what I'm saying? I can't expect people to understand what's going on in my mind. I can't expect people to make sense of what I say. I couldn't care less. I don't have time to even understand it myself. I just use my music as a way of getting what's off my mind. Now, you want to listen, listen. If you don't, good. Go listen to one of the traditional, normal rappers. I couldn't care less.

I don't know who this is, but my first impression is that he reminds me of Lil' Kev from Always Sunny.

So, after seeing one of his vines I went to YouTube to listen to a few of his songs. After looking him over for a while I can't decide if he's legit or if he's playing a character. Personally, I think it's a case like Liberace: that's a facet of his personality that he's amped up to 11 and is milking the hell out of. Dude is so ridiculously over the top that it's a character to an extent, but I believe it's legit at its core.
Either way it's entertaining and he's fascinating, but I think it's a little bit of both an act and an actual person. Which is fine by me, as I think the entertainment world needs more OTT characters like this guy.

"Hologram Panda" was a pretty entertaining mixtape. Jody Highroller brings the rice out, rain or shine.

Exactly who I think of every time I see or hear his name. I have no idea who the other guy is so it's strange thinking about that Riff Raff doing what the other unknown (to me) one is doing.

(LANGUAGE WARNING FOR THIS ENTIRE POST)
Gang, there's not really a debate. It's a character. Prior to Riff Raff, he was doing other characters.
Case in point:
That said, he's had a hand in some fun songs.
This is what made me a Riff Raff fan:
This was also a fun jumpoff:

I've never known what to think about people who can get away with living a gimmick 24/7 and actually make decent money out of it... I've got nothing but respect for them, myself. The entertainment world, as I said in my other post, needs more over the top characters (in my opinion), so I actually love when a guy like this comes up with a character that gains popularity and attention. Personally, I think the people that take one area of their personality and blow it up into a character are the most interesting out there. Elvis, KISS, Liberace; three examples of people who became characters and gained mass popularity and success along the way. Real people are boring - characters are fun. That's just how I see it, anyway. I'd rather see a guy like RiFF RAFF, with rings on each finger and wearing neon clothes than somebody out there in t-shirt and jeans trying to keep it "real". Many people would disagree, but I'm into characters and over the top entertainers.

But the people making a living just off of being the character, with no other talents to back it up (or even if they're not making a living of it, but even can just get away with living their life in character)... that's where I kind of start to hit the jumping off point.

Oh, yeah, there definitely has to be a talent present. I don't disagree with that, but in this guy's case he seems to have talent. He's not the greatest rapper I've ever heard, but he's definitely not the worst. A character to cover up for a lack of talent is annoying, definitely.
