Maybe it's just me judging solely from artwork and stuff, but it makes me kinda mad that traditional cool western style Castlevania characters like Simon and Trevor Belmont were replaced by dorky pretty boy anime eastern style characters like Alucard and Rictor.

Huh, surprised they didn't do a Top 10. There is certainly more than enough good Castlevania games to justify it.

Honestly, I don't see what's so terrible about Simon's Quest. It's actually my personal favorite Castlevania game. I like the different style gameplay and the soundtrack is the most memorable to me.

Same here. I'm biased since Simon's Quest is the one I grew up with but I don't get the hate. It would be one thing if it was a shitty game but it's not. It just gets hated on for being different (and sometimes needlessly difficult).

I think people only hate on "Simons Quest" because the Nerd does.
Is "Simons Quest" one of the weaker installments of Castlevania.....well yeah, But it's not bad.
- Castlevania: Adventure (Gameboy) - Castlevania (N64) - Judgement (Wii)
They're bad, "Simons Quest" just happens to be part of a great franchise with SO many good-great games, So it kinda sticks out (See Zelda II).

Castlevania 64 was a missed opportunity. The reason because it was rushed. www.unseen64.net/2008/08/28/castlevania-64-beta-analysis/For me the best game is Castlevania 3 Dracula's Curse. It was challenging and hard alright but it makes you want to play it over and over until you get it right. It had the best characters, it was Alucard's debut into the games. The AVGN ain't got nothin' on me because I beat that game a lot when I was a kid.

Simon's Quest gets a lot of flack due to the fact that the game featured a vast overworld, but an inability to actually jump from one place to another if need be, in addition to the fact that when you saw "What a horrible night to have a curse.", that meant the enemies would be twice as tough.
To me, one of the hallmarks of the franchise were the games that were created with the Symphony of the Night blueprint (the GBA/DS games). Harmony of Dissonance even featured the exact style of that game on a smaller scale (and without the VA).
But, I'm still gonna rank Circle of the Moon as my all-time favorite. It's difficult, and it may not be pretty, but it's one of those games in the franchise that doesn't get a lot of recognition for what it was and what it accomplished.

It's pretty much because of the AVGN video. Simon's Quest was really rough around the edges in some places and had a hellacious learning curve. But once you got the hang of the game, it was great. It was also the prototype for the SotN-style of Castlevania along with Vampire Killer for the MSX.

Super Castlevania IV should have been number 1.
As for Castlevania II, I'm a fan. It's got some flaws, the text every damn time it goes from day to night or vice versa, and the parts that require a strategy guide to figure out. But it's got a great environment, good graphics, and amazing music.
