Watching the show again. Most of the characters in the show have glaring flaws, and the children are down right insane. Hall has split personalities. Lois of all people seem the most level headed. So I put her over Peggy hill now in my list of TV mothers I don't like. I'm actually starting to like her, I haven't watched this series since I was 15, all that angst is gone.

Level headed? Ok, sure she was the most constant of characters, but that consistency was quaker instant bitch. The shit she did was inhuman.

She made Francis eat a lit cigarette when she found out he was smoking. Not exactly normal.
Now Hal, he's probably the best of the bunch. Yes, he's a little neurotic and panicky, but he's not nasty like the others.

Honestly, I can't think of Hal without thinking of Heisenberg.

Lois was an egotistical sociopath. How is that normal, outside of corporate boardrooms?

Honestly, I can't think of Hal without thinking of Heisenberg. Well, there's a fan theory going around right now that Breaking Bad will end with Walt going into witness protection and BECOMING Hal.

You mean in the family of all the MITM characters? because in both cases, none of them are normal.

Ranking the normalcy of the people of MITM is like ranking the normalcy of the inmates at Arkham Asylum, or who the healthiest lepers are on the colony. Also, whenever I think of MITM, I think of this - www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2V0j-eDf5k - thank you, Family Guy....and Bryan Cranston for actually voicing Hal in it.

The thing about Malcolm in the Middle was that, like so many shows, it thought it would be great to do that dysfunctional family of howler monkeys (and, that was a joke). Of course, the problem with dysfunctional family sitcoms is that you don't have a lot of room for creativity, and eventually the well went dry.
Props have to be given for them to decide against going the "ultra-crass" route (which is what "Family Guy" did, and other programs like "The War at Home" decided would be best), but in developing their characters, they created an unlikable protagonist in Malcolm.
But... Lois is still evil. Not "pure evil", but "Mommy Dearest" evil.

But haven't they had flashbacks on MITM of Hal and Lois back in the day? Without those I suppose that theory would make sense but unless there's a time machine involved I'm not seeing it.

I've watched a handful of episodes the last few days, and I'd give my vote to Dewey. He's weird, but he's a little kid in a nut-job of a family. Of course he'd have to be in his own world.
Followed by Hal.

I think Dewey and Hal are very similar in that they take trips from reality to avoid dealing with their real life. Can't say that I blame them. they also seem to be the only ones who ever think of others as well. The rest are so egocentric it is insane.

That's even better then the theory that Walt only cooked meth so he can finally teach Jesse chemistry and his final words were B- to Jesse
