Hard to say what he was worse at. Commentary or wrestling.

Mongo was in the 4 Horsemen. Mongo. Let that sink in. So technically he's a WWE Hall of Famer

This thread is apropos, and that don't mean you're digging in the dirt with farm implements.

Mongo was in the 4 Horsemen. Mongo. Let that sink in. And a former United States Champion, back when the belt was actually worth something. And who can forget this gem: "Bobby The Stain! Bobby The Stain!"

"THIS MATCH IS GONNA BE BRUTAL AND BRUTE-FUL!"
When I had Classics on Demand, I kept a running tally somewhere of inane Mongo quotes from old Nitros.

How'd he get that gig on Nitro anyway? Seriously. He had no wrestling connection did he? Outside of being ringside at WMXI

How'd he get that gig on Nitro anyway? Seriously. He had no wrestling connection did he? Outside of being ringside at WMXI I've always wondered that too, because I remember Tony and Bobby during one of the PPVs or Clashes were hyping the press conference where they were going to announce the specifics of the first Nitro. They kept hyping up that a "big name" was going to be part of the Nitro broadcast crew. Heenan kept saying "do you know who it is?" and Tony wouldn't say or didn't know either, so I always wondered if it was supposed to be someone else.

I'm definitely in the minority but I thought Mc Michael was passable as a commentator and did the best he could as a wrestler. Let's not forget that he was working with two bad knees and didn't have years of experience before he was given a serious push.
I thought he got his spot based on his work on local Chicago TV as a football analyst and the fact that he was a legit tough guy and a bit of a loon. This is a guy who spent his offseasons with the Bears hunting rattlesnakes with nothing more than his bare hands and a burlap sack.

Ric Flair loses all credibility when he justifies Mongo being on the Horsemen while burying Luger, Sid, and Jarrett.

Ric Flair loses all credibility when he justifies Mongo being on the Horsemen while burying Luger, Sid, and Jarrett. To be fair to Flair (you've got to be fair to Flair!), I think what he said, in proper context, was more along the lines of Mongo's personality fit better with the Horsemen "image" than Luger, Sid or Jarrett. I also don't think he totally buried Luger, Lex just had the unfortunate task of trying to fill Tully's spot while still being really, really green. Of course, Luger never did get a whole lot better from his early years, but in that particular time period, he, not Sting, was supposed to be WCW's "star of the future" as their version of Hogan. Double J looked like he fit, and he should have fit, but Flair wasn't necessarily looking for somebody who could succeed him, someone to "pass the torch" to. He was looking for complimentary pieces who wouldn't challenge his spot as "the Man" in the group.
