www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/05/lone-ranger-cast-critics_n_3709067.html?utm_hp_ref=entertainmentCritics. It's all the critics fault. Quotes from the article: "This is the deal with American critics: they’ve been gunning for our movie since it was shut down the first time; that’s when most of the critics wrote their initial reviews,"~ Armie Hammer “I think the reviews were written seven or eight months before we released the film...I think the reviews were written when they heard Gore [Verbinski] and Jerry [Bruckheimer] and me were going to do 'The Lone Ranger.' They had expectations that it must be a blockbuster. I didn't have any expectations of that. I never do. Why would I?"~ Johnny Depp "Every movie gets shut down -- especially the big ones...You see the movie, you storyboard it, do location scouts and budget it; then the studio wants the same movie for 30 percent less. You say you can't do that and you say you're not kidding; they say they're not kidding and then they shut you down." ~ Gore Verbinski, pre-release “While we were making it we knew people were gunning for it...I think it was the popular thing when the movie hit rocky terrain they jumped on the bandwagon to try and bash it. They tried to do the same thing with to 'World War Z,' it didn't work, the movie was successful. Instead, they decided to slit the jugular of our movie." ~Armie Hammer, AGAIN "You can't watch Citizen Kane and then watch Bucky Larson The Lone Ranger." ~ Me, referencing a dead board meme. Now, wait two months and we'll get a "But the critics don't matter!" story from another movie's cast most likely.

Yep, it's the fault of the critics. That's why every movie the critics don't like bombs, and every movie they do like is a huge hit.
I love that there's a reference to World War Z, when critics liked it. Maybe, just maybe, the changes made to World War Z were a good thing, and The Lone Ranger just sucked.

While I haven't seen the film yet, I'm sure its apparent lack of quality caused bad word of mouth- but thinking about it, audiences don't seem as receptive to westerns during the summer blockbuster season. The most recently successful ones off the top of my head- 3:10 To Yuma, True Grit and Rango (sorta) were released in the fall, winter and spring respectively. But Wild Wild West may have destroyed any chance for the general public to take a potential western-themed blockbuster seriously (and not without good reason).

THE LONE RANGER just seems like a simple concept. Very little really needs to be put in to create a great story. Cripes, the original Clayton Moore episodes still stand up very well.
Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp could've made a great movie without the over the top action and SFX.

BS. It looked bad from the.very first trailer, AND was in the middle of a stacked summer

maybe it bombed because people are tired of Johnny Depp being "quirky" all the time and thought the idea of a white guy in a post-Tropic Thunder world playing a minority was inherently both racist and silly.

Was ANYONE asking for a new Lone Ranger to begin with?

Dude does have a point about World War Z though. World War Z got mostly positive reviews though, so not really. It had a lot of negative press due to production issues, but critics actually liked it.

I've only seen the trailers for this movie. It looked like a bland action/western with Johnny Depp playing the same character he's played since the Pirates movies became popular that for some reason was 2 1/2 hours long. And all the reviews I've seen are pretty much saying the same thing.

I imagined Depp throwing one of his thirteen wispy scarves over his shoulder as he said that quote.
seriously though - even attempting to tacitly blame the critics for your sucky movie is just grasping at straws.

how about the fact that its a property that no one under the ages of 75 gives a f*** about
seriously the only person in the media i've seen say that were looking forward to that film was Bill Cosby

It sucked because it was promoted as TONTO! (and oh yeah, the guy with the mask), featuring Johnny Depp playing a quirky character for the 47th time

But they could have named this "Johnny Depp's Quirky Cowboypalooza" and it wouldn't have mattered. The movie is the problem here, not the name. The release date didn't do it any favors either.

One of my local newspapers also gave it a four star review so not every critic out there was gunning for this film. I believe one of the major complaints of the film was making the titular character such an ineffectual putz for the majority of it.

Lone Ranger people, critics don't have as much power as you think. If they did, Pacific Rim would have beaten Grown Ups 2.

As a real lil kid, I watched Lone Ranger re-runs; the property COULD have had some life. Releasing a mediocre looking flick amid blockbusters did em no favors. Shoulda tried for Xmas or round there. Do like James Cameron does
