I was just on Facebook and saw something about how Greg Valentine worked for some indie promotion and supposedly the cops came and found drugs, the company denies it and blah blah blah. Anyway, it got me thinking, is it just me or does it seem like every other day now there's some kind of online drama between wrestlers, promoters, etc.? It seems to be happening at all levels of the business, from the smaller indies all the way to famous guys like Kurt Angle and Hulk Hogan. Do you find this stuff entertaining or do you think it's embarrassing?

Depends on who is involved. If it's a wrestler or promotion to where the first thought you have is: "Man, I haven't thought of that name in 10 years," I'm interested.
If it's somebody like Hogan, Angle, matt hardy, etc., I may look at it, but I'll shrug my shoulders and roll my eyes.

I take no pleasure in seeing guys I grew up watching publicly circling the drain and trying to use that for publicity. It gets kind of depressing seeing guys from 20 years ago trying to work the internet to draw attention to themselves, people who should have moved on in life but refuse to, or are stuck with wrestling because they have a habit, or divorce after divorce has left them with no other choice.

I think we're just getting more exposure to the shenanigans of pro-wrestling. Undoubtedly this stuff was happening back in the 1980s and before, but due to a combination of communication and kayfabe, it just never got out of select circles.

What's Greg Valentine been up to? It still amazes me that he hardly looks any different to how he did when he was in the WWF.

What's interesting to me is that it's not as though this information is just escaping. For the most part it's the wrestlers and to a lesser extent the promoters who are posting this stuff online. It's even becoming common for people to try to use social media against each other. When a guy as old as Greg Valentine (no offense, but come on) is using Facebook to call out a promoter he has a legit issue with, I think that speaks volumes.

In the 80s, guys would just call the fire marshal or local sports commissions to get their enemies/competitors shut down. More often than not, they'd simply stop working with/for them and move on. Why is the online drama so commonplace now? Tons of reasons, bunch already stated. Some guys just trying to keep their name out there, some simply don't give a crap anymore, social media simply existing, some guys treat it as part of some larger angle/work, even when they're the only one "in" on it. Also, the proliferation of what traditionalists consider "marks" infiltrating the business, either as would-be promoters or workers themselves.

Greg's been on the receiving end of this stuff too. Last year I think, when he apparently no-showed some gig but kept the money, tried to blame it on a dying family member. Even his bud HTM called him out publicly to give the money back.

It's embarrassing to be honest. Nothing sadder about hearing some wrestler you used to love is now some jerk off crying over a couple hundred bucks or something.

I lost all respect for Valentine as a human being a few years ago. He was on a show for Windy City Pro Wrestling, one of the longest running independent promotions in the country at the time. He had the local wrestlers run and get him alcohol before his match and was completely wasted in the locker room. On his way to the ring for his match, he stumbled on the ring steps and hurt himself. A week later, he sued the promotion, the venue, and the city the show took place in for the injury. He ultimately won in court, and Windy City Pro Wrestling had to shut down permanently as a result of it. He's a scumbag.

Damn, that's about as sad an indie wrestling story as I've heard, and that's saying something. I do remember reading about a case with Valentine suing a promotion over a leg injury somehow involving the ring steps, but I only heard Valentine's side and he didn't say much about it as the case was still ongoing at the time. This is the first I've heard of it since.

I think part of it is that although these shenanigans have always been around, since wrestling isn't that popular anymore, the wrestlers are not let away with it (since they're no longer seen as celebrities). So more comes out. It's both entertaining and pretty sad. As proof I present :

I think it's more likely that this kind of thing has been going on for decades but it's only in the last 10-15 years that there was a platform for the news to get so widespread.
