Apparently, the stranger thing is a teaser to a movie already out, according to C Robert Cargill. "JJ Abrams has gotten so good at his mystery box viral marketing that his latest teaser is for a film that has been playing for weeks." ...and they said nobody would be interested in seeing "R.I.P.D."

I remember reading somewhere Abrams wanted to do a version of the Count of Monte Cristo, so I say this is that, and as a TV series rather than a film Looks like it. You got a guy in period piece type clothing removing rope bindings after washing up on a beach. That definitely reminds me of Edmond Dantes's escape from prison. And there's the mention of being reborn.

First I thought it was a Jesus twist. But after reading the posts about the count of Monte Cristo, I think that looks possible

Whatever it is it has my attention. Doesn't he have a show debuting on NBC or one of the other major networks this fall?

They've had radio trailers for books for a while, this is the next logical step.

Books are gonna have trailers now? *sigh* Why the hell not? That's not too uncommon, a few years ago Tim Kring (Creator of Heroes and The Touch) wrote a book and also did a trailer for it. He even got Zachary Quinto to do narration for the trailer.

It's okay, because it'll just eventually be made into a movie anyways.
