Do you think HHH really believes this crap or do you think he knows he's the ultimate "also ran" and is intentionally trying to beef up his legacy?
He got popular riding HBK's coattails and the sales of DX merch meant that the group wasn't just going to disband once HBK got hurt/left.
He only became the "top guy" because Foley took a break, Austin got injured and retired and the Rock moved on to another career all in rapid succession.
He only STAYED the main guy because he was the son-in-law of the promoter and thus GUARANTEED to stick around.
He compares himself to Ric Flair, but when a guy faced Flair, even if they lost, most came out looking like a million bucks. Everybody HHH beat wound up looking far worse than when they entered the feud. Batista is just about the ONLY exception.
He's good. I'll give him that. He really is that "solid B-plus". But he is not anywhere near the same league as Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Steve Austin, the Rock, or even guys like Undertaker, HBK, Andre, Goldberg, Sting, and John Cena as far as main stream relevance goes. And these attempts at making him look like he is up there are just sad.
You know who you could compare HHH to pretty accurately? Kane. He rode the Undertaker's coattails for a bit, became his own thing, and never really became the major breakout success that his storyline brother/enemy did. But he stuck it out, full time, for longer. He had good matches and remained over despite being saddled with some really iffy stuff (some of it at the hands of HHH himself).
His injecting himself into the CM Punk thing (with Kevin Nash, of all people) and throwing a wet blanket on the whole thing was, I THOUGHT the last gasp of his ego. (This guy is REALLY breaking out? I'm gonna beat him!) But then he spent an entire year (and FIVE MILLION DOLLARS) on a three match series with Brock Lesnar.
If somebody had said, after news of Lesnar's signing became public "I'll be they bring him in just to feud with HHH all year" they'd have been dismissed as "HHHaters". But that's what happened!
All that said? This thing he's doing now? Where's he's basically taking all of that ****-talking I've done above and used it to become some sort of uber-meta-heel? LOVE IT! If THAT is the payoff to all of that stuff before? BRA-VO!
Definitely importing this DVD, is what I'm saying.
