So my third iPod Classic has effectively bricked on me via a faltering hard drive. I've had it up to here with Apple products and reliability issues, but frankly they've got the market so damn cornered on the mp3 player front that I really don't know what to look at. The trouble is I'm looking for something to fill the same lines as the Classic, i.e. a high capacity player for studying or driving versus to workout with, and pretty much all the SanDisk and Sony products I can find are all made to compete with the Nano or Shuffle. I haven't heard a thing from Creative Labs for a while either.
I guess that's because most people if they don't just use Pandora are using their phones for mp3s now, but I still like the idea of not having -everything- on one device. I figure I can finagle my way past iTunes compatibility if I have to, but this is still incredibly frustrating.

The last decent one I had was the Zen Stone. Great little device, but I lost it at an anime convention.

Was awesome during high school since it didn't have a screen and was pretty rugged so I could stow it in my pocket. Not sure what I did with it, probably lost it after I bought an iPod touch.

Cowon and Archos might still sell some.

I heard good things about the Sony MiniDisc player, although the capacity of its media is probably puny by today's standards.

The Sony ones are OK, as long as you're fine with Flash Memory (meaning you're probably looking at a 16 or 32 GB size limit) as opposed to a mini hard drive (much larger capacity, but also more prone to going bad on you).
That's really the problem with buying a hard drive based player. It's ultimately not as reliable.

I lost my Sansa Clip when I was in Oregon/Idaho for work earlier in the year. I wanted something that would be sturdy, easy to keep track of, have a good interface, was cheap, and had efficient battery life. I went to a pawn shop and got a used LG Rumor Touch for $10 and then an SD-Card for $10 (my phone has no headphone jack). At the airport on the way home I accidentally locked it and it was essentially worthless. However after about a half hour on the phone with Virgin Mobile I somehow talked them into sending me a replacement through the mail. So far I've been really happy with my Rumor Touch.

How long did you have your iPod for? Less than a year? If so, call applecare. They'll replace it.

I bought a Sansa from BestBuy for 39.99 and have had it for about 5 years now and it still works perfectly. Have always found Apple products severely over-priced.

I'll have to save this thread. All of my Ipods eventually die.
And I don't want to use my phone for it because I want like 150 GB of music. I"m on my second classic but this ones been running strong for well over a year. So hopefully it maintains.

Zune may be dead with updates and new production, but the little things are great. I have a smaller 32gb one that has been running basically non-stop for 3 years. Works awesome with my 360, too.

Yeah I have been using my Philips gogear for almost 5 years now with no problems. It has been dropped many times and no issues. Mines broke a few months back when earphone jack got loose. Best MP3 player I've had. That is how my first one died. Well actually it still works but only puts sound out from the right channel. BUt I have dropped it,kicked it,had it fall into the toilet, etc and it kept working. Got a 8 gig now that was around 45 bucks and worth it. But then I hate Apple. And have ever since the Apple IIgs debacle.

I too rock the sansa clip.
I like it because its drag and drop and doesn't need a special program to use.
I've had zero problems with it for the past year or so.

Sorry to double post, but I really think the high capacity mp3 players have been replaced by smart phones.
