Wasn't this guy an asshole in real life? From what I heard he was. I was never a fan of the guy, but this is sad. R.I.P. Champ.

I remember when he tried to get into MMA, sort of. He had a fight on an Indian reservation or something so that he wouldn't have to have a blood test. Also, he demanded changes to the rules that essentially made it a boxing match in a cage. He always claimed that he later passed blood tests, but he sure seemed full of shit because he avoided taking them in an official way like athletes have to. He only took fights where he didn't have to take a blood test or if he could have it done by his people privately.

Sounds like he was in extreme denial about his HIV/AIDS status to me.
Can we bury Rocky V with him?
RIP

RIP to one of the Rocky franchise's most hateable villains.
Also, not to shun the gravity of the situation, but for a moment I read this as "Tommy Davidson".

Shame, he was a pretty good boxer and good in Rocky. He did seem to go off the deep end after his HIV diagnosis though.

wait, so all of the reports of him having clean HIV tests, and the original was a false positive weren't true? Anyway RIP, I like Rocky V.

wait, so all of the reports of him having clean HIV tests, and the original was a false positive weren't true? Anyway RIP, I like Rocky V. He claimed to have tested negative numerous times and that his failed test in the '90s was a false positive. However, if you followed his attempts at continuing his fighting career, you would notice that he only fought in places where he could go compete without taking a blood test. I think in one jurisdiction the blood testing was more lenient and he could provide his own blood work to them that he had done with his people. To me that was a dead giveaway that he was lying. He was in poor health in the last year of his life and just lost his life. I think it's safe to say now that he truly did contract HIV and that he was lying about testing negative for it later in life.

Yes you make all the sense in the world, but with how the times have changed with medicine, hasn't HIV become very controlable in the sesne of preventing it from becoming full blown AIDS? Can you actually die of HIV without it becoming AIDS? Or are you implying that he actually had full blown AIDS?

Not to mention that from the article: Morrison denied it until the end but it seems like he was in denial/lying. I think that I remember reading that he stopped taking his HIV medications because he thought that it was a sham and his doctors were quacks or something at some point as well.

I'm also not an expert, but I've heard that with with proper medication, a person who live a pretty regular, healthy lifestyle and not progress to getting AIDS. I guess the most public example is Magic Johnson who contracted HIV over 20 years ago and his HIV has not progressed to AIDS.

I guess the most public example is Magic Johnson who contracted HIV over 20 years ago and his HIV has not progressed to AIDS. yeah it seems that tommy's denial caused his death Yes, his denial spelled his own doom. I remember reading an interview he did a decade ago where he repeated a lot of theories about AIDS that had already been disproved by that point. The problem is one that is pervasive in this country where people who have not been well educated in science and medicine embrace the opinions that they prefer despite those opinions being rejected by the scientific community. What people need to understand is that despite their potentially massive egos, scientist use pliable terms like theories and supported hypotheses as opposed to assertive terms such as proven, asserted, etc. That is because the less assertive terms leave open the possibility that we might learn more in the future about the topic. Yes, evolution is called a theory but that is because theory is about as assertive a term as scientists use (its not called a hypothesis, after all). Gravity is also called a theory. Are you going to defy scientists by walking off a 5 story building because you refuse to believe in gravity since it is "only a theory"? Anyways, I think the point is that he refused to believe the evidence until it was too late. He also insisted that it was perfectly safe for him to have unprotected sex with his wife. Is she okay?

The first step to fixing a problem is to admit you have one. Tommy Gun never even got to that step.

But while it sucks dying at 44, I still can't help but feel that the guy only has himself to blame for his death by living in total denial about himself having HIV and refusing to get help for it. R.I.P
