I have a question about Okada. So from what I gather when he first won the IWGP Title it was seen as a huge upset. Especially considering how he basically beat the ace of the company in doing so. My question is, the consensus around Okada at that point was that he was undeserving of holding the title. Was it a case where he wasn't built up properly to it, or was he considered talent wise below the quality of what a top champion should be? Also when did general opinions change on him as a top player? It wasn't an upset just because Okada beat Tanahashi. Its traditional that when a young lion goes on excursion and comes back, he gets a customary beating at the hands of the champion with the belt on the line. As far as I know, Okada's the only man who's ever not only won in that situation, but completely hung in the match with the champ and proved to be an equal. It wasn't a fluke victory. Okada took Tanahashi to his limit and hit him with the Rainmaker which brings EVERYBODY down. That finisher has been and still is currently considered death. Many ways to avoid it, but it only takes one and its over. I think the consensus was very wait and see. Okada in the run up to that title match was showing that he was several steps ahead of most ex-young lion in that situation. He had a swagger and confidence that most guys at that point in their careers just don't have. He had an aura about him, was shown to be extremely athletic, and had a killer moveset that was rapidly evolving. If anyone had a chance going into that match, it was Okada. I guess you could say he wasn't worthy in the traditional sense, but New Japan was trying something that they hadn't done before and people were all eyes to see whether or not it would pay off. New Japan's business is better than its been in a long time, and Okada is as over as anybody in New Japan. I'd say the experiment paid off. I do remember that when it happened, a lot of people were pretty stoked about it.

* New Japan ran it's 42nd Anniversary Show at the place it all began in 1972, Ota Ward Gymnasium, rather than the usual Korakuen Hall show, and once again saw a packed house.
* A 10 bell salute was held for the late, great Billy Robinson before the show.
* Okada came from behind to beat Ibushi in an amazing champion vs. champion main event that saw Ibushi incredibly kick out of the Rainmaker at 1, like he did the Boma Ye last year, before finally succumbing to the same move.
* El Desperado attacked Liger after their match to try and provoke him into a singles match. Liger agreed but raised the ante, suggesting a Mask vs. Mask match! Could we finally see Liger unmasked after 25 years?

Holy shit! I just can't imagine Liger unmasking.... Is El Desperado the guy they'd give that rub to? I think he's decent in the ring, but that would be a massive rub and I'm not sure Desperado's the guy to receive it.

Really shocking results. Benjamin/Nakamura final now? Strange. I'm thinking the complete opposite. Suzuki over Fale in the finals. I can't see them doing Nakamura/Tanahashi again or Nakamura/Okada with basically no build.

Fale's an interesting possibility and New Japan has been pushing him as a bad ass.
I think we might have Fale over Nakamura in the final. I was personally rooting for Shibata, but my guess is that we get a Shibata G1 victory this year.

The fact that Fale went over Naito makes me think he's at LEAST going over Shelton.
On the other side of things, I honestly can't even make a guess. I love me some Nakamura, but I'd love to see Suzuki/Fale for the sheer randomness of a final match it would be.

Yeah, I think Fale's going over too, but the other is a tossup for me.
