Shibata is a guy who should have been the GUY before he left and i have never heard the full story so i can't comment on why he left but dude seems to almost lack passion but still has enough to put on great matches like Lesnar yes. he was handpicked by Inoki to be the GUY in NJPW many years ago, because Inoki had a hard-on for strong / MMA style. when NJPW wasn't doing well back then, he left them to pursue other things (i.e - freelance and MMA), while others like Tanahashi stuck through thick and and thin and helped them to grow as #1 company in Japan. his post NJPW adventures weren't at all rosy. his MMA career was pretty much a bust. to this day, there's some heat between Shibata and Tanahashi. you can read more about Shibata-Tanahashi heat here -> yottsumepuroresu.blogspot.jp/2014/05/njpw-hiroshi-tanahashi-talks-about-his_22.html i believe this is his time now. this guy has been AMAZING for more than a year. almost always puts best match of the night. like 2002 Chris Benoit level good. he deserves the title more than anyone else. I always thought it was through a falling out or something but just leaving what a stupid decision

With the way that the G1 is structured (I looked it up and that there's a "special singles match" between the two runners up). I think Nakamura and Okada will both finish second in their blocks behind Shibata and Naito respectively. Then we get the seeds for Nakamura/Okada while Shibata kicks Naito's face in and we get the set up for Shibata/Styles at Wrestle Kingdom where Shibata finally fulfills his destiny.
I can see Shibata cashing in his G1 shot at Wrestle Kingdom like Okada and Naito have previously, and then we get big singles matches where Shibata blasts through Bullet Club one at a time including a possible tag match between Shibata/Goto or even Shibata/Sakuraba vs Guns and Gallows for the tag straps. I just feel like it's his year. He's earned it.
Now that I've said all this, it probably won't happen.

Yeah, Styles hanging with one of the all time puroresu greats was amazing. My only gripe is that I'd rather Styles locked in the calf crusher for the win. Still excellent though.

Well, as I predicted, Tanahashi beat Nakamura putting Shibata on top of block A. I need to watch that match as it was apparently fan-freaking-tastic.

Honma's lone win will be a great moment.

Honma's lone win will be a great moment. Honma has DBS, Jr., Kojima, and Benjamin left. I couldn't see him getting a W unless it was a huge spoiler to someone who'd be about to win. He's getting a goose egg this year.

Considering Benjamin been on a losing streak against the Japanese competition and he's his last opponent, Honma is getting his first 2 points.

All he has to do is tie Tanahashi and Nakamura, but that requires both of them to lose at least one of their final three matches. There's also the Fale factor. If Fale wins out, it doesn't matter cause Fale goes on to the finals.

Elgin is one of those guys who isn't bad, but really shines against certain people (like Davey and Steen). It's actually quite amusing that Bennett and Cole get to go to New Japan before Elgin.
