Store owner charged with murder after shooting beer thief

A Texas store owner was charged with murder over the weekend after he fatally shot a man who was allegedly walking out without paying for beer.

According to Corpus Christi police, the unnamed 39-year old victim was shot multiple times — including at least one blast to the head — on Saturday night by 51-year-old Rodney Duve, the owner of Duve’s Quick Stop. The victim, who KRIS-TV described as a “known gang member,” was reportedly walking out the door when he was killed.

“He didn’t have to shoot the person for two cases of beer,” a neighbor told KRIS-TV. “A life doesn’t equal two cases of beer. On occasion when I came in [to the store], I saw him in a rage, a scary rage,” the neighbor said of Duve. “I don’t think it’s a reason to take someone’s life for two cases of beer when the person was almost outside.”

But not everyone agrees that Duve was in the wrong.

“Texas is supposed to be the land of lax gun laws but the police have been quick to throw all the blame at a man who was simply trying to protect his business,” Stephen Kersey of the “boys club” blog Every Joe wrote. “Don’t want to get shot? Don’t be a thief. It’s that simple. Be a useful part of society and you won’t have to be worried.”

he deserves it. guy wasn't physically threatening him. that's the kind of thing you call the police for. I believe in a right to defend yourself and your property, but it was a case of beer. never going to support murder over something that inconsequential.

Yeah The Store Owner was in the wrong here. I could understand if The Deceased was armed and threatening to shoot him or shooting at him but he was unarmed.

So if a person was stealing your TV or gameboy advance sp out of your house, you would just let them do it? Or assume they just wanna steal and call the cops after they leave.

No, but I wouldn't kill them, either. Unless they were armed and had the intention of killing me. My TV/Gameboy isn't worth a human life. A few teeth and some broken bones, yes, but not a human life.

Sorry. Shoplifting, which is what this is, is not justification for murder. If it was an armed or violent robbery it'd be one thing. But it wasn't.

We have police for a reason. Let them do their job instead of playing vigilante.

Unless you got xray vision, you don't know if this robber is armed or not. So you're either going to let yourself get robbed, or fight someone you don't know is armed or not

This guy at the liquor store wasn't trespassing, was he?

The store owner was completely wrong in this instance. It says the man was attempting to leave the store so most likely he shot the dude from behind. There's no reason to kill somebody for stealing some beer especially if they weren't being aggressive or threatening.

Store owner went to far. Had it been me, I certainly would have had my gun out and aimed. I definitely would have warned the guy to come back to pay...and if he didn't or made a bad move or something like that, I would have shot him in the legs.

This is like if you invited a bunch of people over to your house for a Super Bowl party and some friends bring some people that you don't know and as everyone is leaving some guy tries to walk out with a couple of cases of your beer. I would hope that one wouldn't shoot the guy in that instance.

Not to mention that the store more than likely has a security camera that can then be analyzed by police to determine who the suspect is, and probably was analyzed to determine that he wasn't justified in shooting this guy.

What kind of Beer are we talking here? Is it Shiner, St Arnolds or Real Brewing? Or was it Frio/ Lone star type stuff. I must know before making my judgement.

Those security cameras aren't really that high of quality. A lot of times, you can barely make out what a person was wearing, much less what teir face looked like.
