Being that it's almost Halloween, I was looking around on Netflix for some horror movies to watch. During my searching, I came across The Toxic Avenger and thought "what the hell?" and gave it a shot.
It wasn't a fantastic movie, but it was definitely better than I was expecting. Not sure if I'm interested in the three sequels they have up, though.
So, yeah, who else has seen The Toxic Avenger? What'd you think of it?

Probably one of the most famous cult movies of all time. Toxie is the hero the world deserves; he's courteous but knows how to deal out punishment (taco restaurant robbers for example).

Fun,campy movie that's covered in splatter. Toxie is a true hero.
Part 2 is funny, and remaining two movies drag out way too long. 2 and 3 were originally one movie and half way through production they decided to split them up. It's very apparent by the way 2 has a "meh" ending despite being fun the rest of the time. 3 just tries to stretch out a plot that didn't need to be that long. 4 was made a decade later after 3 and was an attempt to be a "true sequel" to the original. It tries too hard and gets a mix of 50% hilarity and 50% lame jokes that are phoned in shockness. Not a bad idea if you wanted to check the rest of the films, but just a heads up of what to expect.

It's one of my favorites. The sequels are worth watching for the "What the f*** were these people smoking while making it" factor. Then again Troma's entire catalog is like that.

Lloyd Kaufman's cash cow.
Really like the first movie. The other movies are ok. The animated series was bizarre. Also, Blade Braxton of Wrestlecrap is on the 21st Anniversary edition DVD in a special feature explaining how Toxie inspired his wrestling style. Worth checking out if you can find a copy.

If you can, check out the first Class of Nuke 'Em High flick. It's in the same style and it's a lot of fun.

This makes me miss USA Up All Night, which is where I first saw it.
.......I remember nothing about it that makes me want to watch it again.
The only other thing I know about it is that in a sequel, apparently Toxie &^%$'s the sight back into a blind girl. I don't know how or why I know that.

I have seen it twice, actually. One on YouTube, the other on Netflix. Anyway, I can say that the movie is enjoyable and it indeed has its cult status. However, I remember the first time I watched it, I had a dirty feeling doing so. I watched it not long after my second viewing of "Hobo With A Shotgun." I watched "The Toxic Avenger" because I had heard from some people that it was similar to "Hobo With A Shotgun." Anyway, I kind of saw some similarities. It was pretty gory and I even wonder how they got away with what was shown in it. Not just the gore, but there were a lot of offensive things about it.
I am thinking about checking out more of Troma's library to see what kind of stuff they did. I am really curious.

It's one of those movies your friends talk about when you're a kid, about how "f***ed up" it is. I mean they kill a kid among other things, which was slightly risque in the 90's(when I was a kid)...especially any more considered along the lines of horror or adventure, where the kids are usually okay.
Then I saw it. Eh. It's a decent movie, but hardly anything shocking. If anything, I recommend it because it's a great send up to all the old monster movies, and one of the few parodies that did it right.

I remember watching The Toxic Avenger and Class of Nuke'Em High on USA Up All Night. They had some pretty cheesy movies but I enjoyed watching them.

Rhonda Sheer on USA UP, all night!
Yeah I caught Toxie on a Friday once long long ago. His typhoon of piss right on Satan himself was an amazing moment and the only other character in all of fiction be it books, TV or movies, who would or could do something like that I s Anne Rice's Lestat. Class of Nuke em High had a cameo by Toxie as a young nerd. Just trivia. That universe was sort of married and not really married together. You know some asshat is going to remake this one someday.

In all seriousness, seeing The Toxic Avenger the first time was one of the most artistically and socially important moments of my life. I was 13-years-old and rented it on a whim after recognizing Toxie from "Toxic Crusaders" in the opening previews to Cannibal! The Musical which I had see the week before.
It was an impressionable age for me, and I just remember every moment after moment having a huge impact on me. I'd never seen the genres of film so gleefully blended into each other. I've never seen such intentionally hilarious slapstick vigilante violence. I've never seen such empowered women side-by-side with numerous social critiques side-by-side with not pulling punches with the visuals side-by-side with just being all sorts of fun.
I didn't know the rules of art could be broken like that, or that movies could even be made in such a way. Watching that film and studying Troma's approach to art and business really shaped the way I saw the world, interacted with others and, at an age when conforming and elitism is at its most tempting, was assured that by being myself and just being kind to everyone I would be on a path to success and persona happiness.
Bottom line, that one video rental set off a chain of events that lead me to currently living in New York and waking up every morning knowing I followed my heart, stayed true to my beliefs and made happy and secure life for myself. For that, it will always have an important place in my heart.

I loved how it said on the cover of the original AUS/NZ VHS release Waring this film contains plenty of unnecessary sex and violence you'll love it
Pity that the sequels were total pissmoss.

it's a Troma classic, so I love it. still boggles my mind that they did a children's cartoon and video games based on the concept.

I am really curious. pretty much everything by Lloyd Kauffman is the same in tone/style as Toxic Avenger. even his take on Romeo and Juliet. Hobo with a Shotgun was pretty much a tribute to classic Troma movies.

welcome to the world of Troma
Toxie I feel like part ne is the best followed by four Citizen Toxie. And 23 and are kind of the same level imo. Though you should familiarize yourself with a few ther titles befre watching part four as SGy Kabukiman is featured in it. His film was a great one as well. Highly recommend catching that one.
