So, I was talking last night with my brother about how you end a show like The Walking Dead. Assuming that the show ends on their own terms like Breaking Bad, it's kind of hard to think about how the show might end. I mean, you can't really have a happy ending in a zombie apocalypse, so what do you do?
It's for that reason that I thought this might make for a good thread; how do you think The Walking Dead will end, or how do you think it should end? You don't have to write out a script, but just give your basic idea as to how to end the show.
I thought up a few different endings, but the one that I think would work the best is as follows.
In the last season, the main characters that we all know start to die off slowly but surely, from either disease or simply a lack of will to go on anymore. In the very last episode, it's just Rick and Carl, but Carl ends up dying while fighting a pack of walkers while he's away from Rick. After Rick finds Carl's dead boy, he's absolutely distraught as you'd expect, and the last half of the episode is him trying to find something to live for; a reason to keep on fighting. Being that he has absolutely nothing left to live for, he gives up; he throws his guns down and admits defeat. As he's lying in the middle of a field, completely dejected, a huge pack of walkers start to close in on Rick as the camera pans up and eventually fades to black.
It's not a happy ending, but that's the best idea I can think of when it comes to ending a show shot in the zombie apocalypse.

Rick finds a time machine, but must fight against the governor in order to obtain it. They travel through a bunch of times fighting. We even see Shane come back and side with the governor in his heel turn. It eventually ends with stopping the walker virus before it starts(while using a hover car).

But with characters from "The Walking Dead" instead. Clementine shows up and saves them all. And Kenny will remember that. Has the show ever tied in any parts from the Telltale video game? That would be really cool to see. Even if it's a blink-and-you'll miss it reference with Lee and Clementine in the background of a crowd scene or something.

Heck, you could do a whole season's worth of stories with the time travel plot.

The closest is Michonne looking at a map of Georgia earlier this season and in the middle of the map it says in big, bold letters, "MACON".

It's all a dream in Rick's head and he's still in the hospital.

I don't think it needs to end. I'd rather they just kill off this batch of characters, and start fresh somewhere else. Like Degrassi, except instead of them graduating they die. Limitless opportunities.
If it had to end, though, I'd definitely want to keep it open-ended. A series like TWD doesn't lend itself well to closure. Maybe something like a surprise attack killing everyone in the group except Carl, and then it shows a flashforward with older Carl being the only surviving member of the group, but he's become a total hardass like Shane and just lives on the move with maybe a deep voiceover like "IN THIS WORLD...WE ALL BECOME THE WALKING DEAD"

Rick wakes up and realizes it was just a dream. He shake his wife, who is next to him in bed,and says "I just had the worst dream." His wife rolls over and it is revealed that she is a zombie. Rick yells "Noooooooooo!" Then:

I'd have it end how the comics seem to be heading towards.
Little by little Rick losing his handle on not only his humanity, but his sanity too. While Carl slowly grows up to be a natural born leader and all around good person.
In that respect, I'd either end it with Rick turning and Carl putting him down or Rick having a Shane like heel turn and in a scene that's nearly shot for shot the Rick vs. Shane final encounter, Carl puts Rick down, realizing he's essentially become something like Shane or the Governor.

Clementine shows up and saves them all. And Kenny will remember that. Isn't Kenny kind of presumed dead? Presumed being the operative word. Notice how at the end of the game everyone who was dead was listed as "Died at..." or "Died in..." but with Kenny it said something like "Lost to the herd".

The group is on the move out of Georgia, reaching the state line with a wide view of 100 miles or so.
And they see society, as it was, at work.
And then they realize that their lives the last few years have just taken place in a big "F&^% Georgia" bubble, as everyone else in America outside of the state has been perfectly fine the whole time.
The last image we see is Robert Kirkman strangling the Atlanta Braves' old mascot Chief Noc-A-Homa with a Confederate flag as prostitutes caress his body with $100 bills.

Someone just gets annoyed and kills all the zombies in one day. It's not like it would be hard.

I just hope we see Negan in the show before it does end. Those who read the comics know who I'm talking about
