Anyone remember Luger being called "The Rebel?"
I was watching a VHS tape that had an episode of WWF Challenge from July 1994. Stan Lane was doing play by play and when Luger came out Lane called him "The Rebel." I thought nothing of it, but then he called him that 3 or 4 more times during the match.
So was this a short lived nickname that they tried to give Luger in the WWF, or was this just Stan Lane trying to get something over on his own? I'm assuming the latter because I have never heard him called that anywhere else.

I remember them even referring to his Torture Rack as the "Rebel Rack" also.

...this was my prime period of wrestling fandom, and I don't remember this AT ALL.
But then, even as a kid, I knew life was too short to waste any of it on giving a damn about Lex Luger.

As part of being bought by Ted DiBiase, Luger was going to be called, "The Rebel" with his trunks being switched to the Confederate Flag.

I always thought it was because he was billed as being from Atlanta, Georgia.
And since Georgia was a Confederate "Rebel" state, they thought it would be clever to play on that. Though it totally clashed with the whole American Patriot character he was portraying at the time.

Honestly, I don't really remember that nickname. I remember 'The All-American' Lex Luger and 'Made in the USA' Lex Luger. I've seen reference to the Torture Rack being called the 'Rebel Rack' over the years. I don't doubt that Lex used that nickname for a time in WWF, but I just don't remember it.

Be weird if they made that his moniker for a heel turn, where he acts like an anti-social punk that wears a leather jacket and rides a hog.

As far as what it meant, I figure with Lex's pro USA message it was a reference to the US 'rebelling' against the British in the American Revolution and becoming an independent nation.

I only remember Stan Lane calling him that.
Not only calling him "The Rebel" but "The Renegade" as well.

As far as what it meant, I figure with Lex's pro USA message it was a reference to the US 'rebelling' against the British in the American Revolution and becoming an independent nation. If that were true, then had he stayed, his feud with Bulldog would make sense, and this is probably how it would play out. How it would get over is anyone's guess.
