For some reason it works better on someone like Dick Slater than Lex Luger. Though that nickname in late 87 / early 88 after he split from the Horsemen could have worked.

Not sure if it was Luger but I recall a WWF Magazine with the headline "rebel with a cause." I never knew it was a play off of the James Dean movie. In fact I don't think I knew who James Dean was until mid 20s. I do remember my cousin getting a James Dean poster at the store and asking "is that the guy from the meat company?"

Here I thought this would be about the WWF hiring a young Lex Luger and giving him Dick Slater's gimmick in the mid-late 80s.

As part of being bought by Ted DiBiase, Luger was going to be called, "The Rebel" with his trunks being switched to the Confederate Flag. He would have been a total face in half the country.

I read "Rebel Rack" and it does ring a bell. But, maybe it just sounds like a Southern chick with big hooters.

As far as what it meant, I figure with Lex's pro USA message it was a reference to the US 'rebelling' against the British in the American Revolution and becoming an independent nation. If that were true, then had he stayed, his feud with Bulldog would make sense, and this is probably how it would play out. How it would get over is anyone's guess. Vince would have definitely outdone himself with a feud that was dated by over 200 years.

He was like a throwback to 1984. He never said anything of substance. When he was doing Event Centre/Face-to-Face it was almost hysterically bad. It was just painful and the fact he looked like the boyfriend of 70s porn Barbie didn't help much.

Lane had a strange run in WWF. He came in around late 1993 with little fan fare and barely any mention, if any on TV, of him being a popular wrestler. There was a WWF Magazine one page write up but I can't remember what that said. He never did ppv commentary but usually was on the hotline during those like Ray Rougeau. I'm not even sure when Lane left but whenever he did, it was almost like thinking "I didn't even know he was still around." I think he lasted until mid to late 1995, maybe even to 1996. I do hear his voice saying "REBEL RACK" though. He was a guy who you would only associate with NWA/WCW.
